I've read that many changes made throughout EQ II's history have made it so that almost all classes can solo all the way to max level with relative ease. But I wanted to know how a Wizard compares to some of the stronger solo classes such as a necromancer. Due to my play times, mostly from 11:00PM EST on, I usually end up doing a lot of soloing in MMO's. So I'm looking to see if a Wizard is gonna be a pain to solo with down the road.

I do not play a Wizard, but I play a Warlock (close enough). For a while you won't be able to solo encounter based mobs like a Warlock can, so you'll have to rely on good old root-n-nuke. However a Wizards single target nukes are generally more powerful than a Warlocks, so you should have an easier time than I did in that department.

It basically consists of either rooting the mob where they stand (if it's in a safe spot), then debuffing, then nuking till root breaks and repeat. Or pulling them with a body pull/debuff and then root-n-nuke em in a safe spot. If you get lucky and root seems to last it's full duration despite your nukes (20 seconds), then you want to learn to reapply root just before it is about to wear off, essentially keeping the mob locked down till they are dead, unable to move; however this won't happen most of the time (it usually breaks).

This method will allow you to solo quite well, just get some good drinks and some mana totems and barring bad luck, you'll be able to kill almost non stop.

The ONLY potential problems you will run into are these:

1.) Despite your subjugation skill being maxed, and the mob not being more than 2 levels higher than you, but usually less, you will get resist chains which can be very troublesome. Sometimes the initial root is resisted, and you have to deal with a few shots from the mob before you can recast your root. If this happens multiple times over the course of a fight, it can mean death or downtime.

This doesn't happen all the time, but when it DOES happen, it can be very very annoying. Combine this with the mob resisting your nukes and interrupting you, and you can even get whooped by a mob that you have owned 30 times in a row prior. Just the way it works I guess.

2.) Getting very unlucky and having that 5% chance to break on dmg/hostile action seem like 50% chance. There are just some times where you break your own root very quickly. This isn't a bug or anything wrong with you, just how the numbers work out. Combine it with the first problem I listed, and sometimes you will feel so powerful, killing a ^^^ heroic without it touching you, then on the next fight a ^ standard mob beats you near to death because of these issues.

But as I stated before, I am a Warlock. Most of my power goes towards burning down encounter groups like they are butter. Wizards have a mez ontop of their root, they have a stifle I believe, and your single target nukes are stronger; and at higher levels your aoe capacity will rival a Warlocks.

So the answer to your question is, it can be frustrating, but if you stick with it, yes, Wizards can solo to 70, and they can do it fairly well/easily.

There may be some dead areas along the way but once you get the right spells, and aa, you can dominate. Wizards can solo quest pretty darn well, and we have to be at the top of the list for killing named mobs. I would go STR/WIS with manaburn for soloing

Enrond - t7m.org
