I have a alchemist in it's mid 30s, and it seems that npc bought poisons are just as good or better than all the poisons I can make.... Anyone else agree? I ask, because I'm wondering if I've been missing something. I have a lot of advanced books and enigmas, but it seems that taking up alchemy to make my own poisons has been a waste. I was in a fight with someone earlier and read in the combat text such and such's "elixir heals blah blah for 128". Elixir as in potion!? I see none in my recipes, especially for a lvl 14 which he was. Someone know anything about what elixirs are? I hear that you can do a quest for some tradeskill gear. At what level, and where do you go to obtain these quests? Thanks.

Thanks for the link. Anyone have ideas on the rest of my questions?

There are even NPC sold potions (cures) that are as good as handcrafted. It's on the "To Do" pile (again or in-perpetuity) but is deemed non-priority. There are quest rewards that are potions (or even poisons) which do better than handcrafted (or even mastercrafted). There are even quest reward potions and poisons which are 100% identical to crafted (because they are the -exact same- item *sigh*). However, there are also spell or non-potion item effects which are called 'elixir'. (Not seeing the exact text of what you saw, I can only speculate). As for poisons... Damage poisons are the only ones which are NPC sold. The debuff and 'special effect' poisons are crafted only. Sadly, you only have an extremely limited number of those to craft until 50+. Frankly, the craftable recipes for potions and poisons are really truly pitiful until 40+ when they're barely tolerable until 50+ (with one, formerly popular, potion line not even craftable/usable until 60+). This is another of my quiet (and not so quiet) crusades has been. Oh... if you want to know all the potions and poisons.. I have a table on EQ2Alchemy which has the crafted and many of the NPC and quest reward ones: http://www.eq2alchemy.com/potions-poisons.html

speaking about elixers and stuff, anyone remembers the potions and poisons etc alchemists used to have acces too? like +mitigation and +to multiple stats instead of just one like now would be great to see them make a return to the game (in our books)

I remember them all too well. Note my sig... That was a real poison named for me when DoF came out *sigh* The reason +mit was axed is that it was deemed overpowering. We won't get another craftable +mit or +resist potion. *long wistful sigh* Just when people had begun to notice potions (and even poisons) and start using them, they were massively nerfed. I still haven't really fully recovered (site wise, I mean). All the work I did to get the word out about potions and poisons and get malfunctioning ones fixed... Now, they 'work' so they're mostly considered -low- priority though no other class has any NPC sold that's better than their crafted. *shrug* *sigh* bump this gnome and get her resigned rant. Yes, I am happy for the rest of the crafting improvements, I just know the potion and poison issues don't even rate a blip.
I remember them too, there were some sweet ones, like + Mit and the +Resistance ones. I have tons of them up for sale, but people have trouble finding them, so they seldom sell. The old potions don't count as potions, they won't go into the potion rack and they don't show up when you search for potions. But one day I will hopefully have them sold or have used them up myself

When I first started my assassin the NPC poisons were better and cheaper than the player crafted equivalent, however this changed I believe some LU's ago. Now NPC poison should be more expensive and not as good.

As an alchemist I would love to see the old player buff potions come back. Knowing that you are going up against an NPC that has a poison attack etc would be great to take a potion to help protect you against that type of attack. The ward potions we get to make now are a complete waste of time.
