I loved lore in EQ1, and while I tend to think of EQ2 as more vibrant and detailed at level 70 it's real easy to fall into the pattern of just running instances and raid zones and not really paying too much attention to the story that going on around you. I was reading a post and someone said something to the effect of "Well, if you follow the story of unrest then this makes sense" and I realized I don't know the EQ2 lore for the zone. And then, come to think of it, I realized I don't know the new story of Mayong, and I have no idea who the free thinkers are, and I just don't really feel like I know the story of the game as well as I knew that of EQ1. So in short, I was wondering if someone could tell me the story from these zones in their own words. I find the sites online that have all the books typed up and put on the web, but they don't tend to help too much. I think I'd know it a lot better if someone could post it from the way they understand it.

Unrest dates back to EQ1 and certain events that went on in that zone lead to the way it is currently in EQ2.

Unrest's story partially explains itself if you complete the book collection quests found inside. There's some details left out, but the forums cover the rest.

The Freethinkers is a group of vampire hunters. We were first introduced to them in Desert of Flames, where they were investigating an ancient relic that granted the gift of eternal life through undeath. It was revealed that some vampires were trying to get thier hands on it. Fortunately, we destroyed it. Unfortunately, It was reconstructed in the city of Neriak.

Mayong Mistmoore is the most famous vampire on Norrath. He's been in the limelight of lore since EverQuest first started. Outside of dragon-kind, he's recorded as the oldest living creature on Norrath, and his origins are shrouded in mystery.

Actually, the Freethinkers hunt more than just vampires. They seem to hunt down many threats to Norrath. They are a secret society of hunters that we are allowed to join. They hunt vampires, werewolves, void creatures, and probably many many other things. They have an alliance of sorts with the Circle of the Unseen hand, a rogue guild based in the sewers of Qeynos and led by good old Fippy Darkpaw's decendants. There has also been a hunter of the undead in Befallen who visits there. A dwarf who hunts the hounds of Ethernere. A certain halfling who is a known vessel of the Obelisk inhabitants. The club we know of is in the old Peacock club in Maj'Dul, but Vhalen has hinted they are actually all over Norrath. We can raid an old hideout of theirs that was taken over by the D'Morte Vampires found at Mayong Mistmoore's doorstep in the Loping Plains. Mayong seems to have his hand in a few things in the lore of EQ2. It appears he is studying the Stone of Shissar which is comprised of several runes including the Rune of Vul and Rune of Sunder and has been referred to as the "key to destiny" and seems to hold information on the future of Norrath in EQ2. Queen Thex help the first key to unlocking this mystery, so Mayong appears to have gotten himself close to her to obtain this. The Unrest story of Eq2 is pretty much the same as that of EQ1. A priest of Quellious went to the shores of Faydwer to bring her teachings to those lands. He brought his family along with him. A dwarf went mad, slaughtered everyone in the house and invoked the wrath of Quellious herself. She cursed the dwarf, Garanel Rucksif, and he haunted the grounds of Unrest. Eventually, a priest of Cazic-Thule came, enhanced the fear and goings-on already there, and created the Unrest we have today. Those are some of the facts as I understand them from reading in game and dev posts here on the forums. Anyone feel free to correct any mistakes I have stated. Hope this helps you out some, but doing a search on these boards and cross referencing them with the in game lore found on Lore Norrath and The Athenaeum is going to give you a lot more insight than any of us can give.
