When going to Freeport from Darklight Woods with my low level arasai, I've never bothered with Nektulos.

I've used the Commonlands entrance off Darklight, crossed Commonlands heading eastish and gone to Freeport that way.

It's a little more complicated, but starting in Darklight, a shortcut I like is to go via the Sinking Sands carpets. At Wanderlust Fair, there's a carpet to the Sinking Sands. If you click it, you'll go to SS. A little way from where you land, there's a tent thing with another carpet. Right click it and it will give you the option to return to Neriak/Darklight or East Freeport (think if you left click you'll get sent to Maj'dul...not a big deal but lessens the shortcut aspect). Assuming you don't wander off too far in SS, you definitely won't have to deal with higher level stuff, and it's a quick way to get anywhere in Freeport since you land right by the docks. To get back to Neriak you simply do the reverse, or just call home. I'm pretty sure this is how it works, but it's definitely something like this. Plus it's nice to get a glimpse of a higher level zone if you won't be at that level for awhile like me

Maybe I'm missing something.. but isn't the quickest route to just take take the Common Lands exit and hop on a Griffon to Freeport Station then ring the bell?

For me, it's about 2 minutes using the carpets between Darklight and EFreeport. It's about 4 minutes just running through the Commonlands, but that's on a mount and just cutting straight through gray mobs. A level 9 would probably be running more slowly and have to go around a bunch of that stuff unless they have stealth. The entrance from Darklight puts you right between griffon towers, so I don't think they speed it up at all. It's a small shortcut, but still is one. If you have time and want to actually see some of the next level zone, just go through CL. But if you want to hop over to Freeport really quick (like if you need to meet someone there to make a trade or something and don't want them to have to wait), then I recommend the carpets, especially if you're starting off around Wanderlust. Maybe I'm just lazy or impatient, but cutting even a small travel time in half makes me happy. If you're coming from Nektulos, though, you'll need to follow the path from Darklight to the CL entrance, which is at the south part of the map by the river. I know there used to be a bunch of aggressive stuff along here, but I think they changed that when they added Neriak. I'd still be careful though, as the stuff in Nek is generally level 19+. Once in CL, there's a griffon tower which can take you to the Freeport Station, as Kulssin mentioned. Then it's just a little east to the docks, which you can take to East Freeport or any of the surrounding zones. Edited to fix my bad 3 am sense of direction.
