I want to update my portrait. Is there an easier way that using photoshop to edit an in-game screenie?

No complicated editing necessary; any 170x305 image will work.  <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />  Just crop or resize your image of choice to fit within those dimensions and you're all set.  You can use as simple a program as MS Paint or a free image editor with a few more options like <a href="http://irfanview.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Irfanview</a>.
