View Full Version : Is it possible to macro self target, cast, return to previous combat target?

Pretty much what I said in the subject. I have an SK and our buff that has a 5 heal proc is very hand before a fight, but sometimes I need to recast it. I am not all that dexterous yet with the hotbar and mouse, etc. The annoyance here for me is having to hit f1 to target myself first, then cast, then click back on what I was fighting. Can I macro this easily do you think? Cheers

Well, the game uses implied targeting, so if you're casting a beneficial spell, it will recognize that you don't want to cast it on the mob and it will cast on you (or whoever the mob is targeting). If it's a self-only spell, it'll cast on you regardless of who or what you have targeted.

Healers use this all the time - target the tank, heals will hit the tank, damage and debuffs will hit the tank's target. Many other classes use it as a sort of low-rent assist.

However, there is a way to bop back and forth between yourself and the mob. Mine is the tab key, but I can't remember if that's the default or if I bound that action to the tab key. You can go into your EQ2 menu -> options and find the commands, and map them wherever you want. And I think that action I have might just be "toggle between last two targets." Whatever.

Just as an FYI, since I'm rambling anyway, F1 will always target you, F8 will target the nearest mob.

Thanks for the reply. however with this spell, the implied targeting, I don't think, is working the way you mentioned. It is a self, or group friend buff, so while I have a mob targeted, it will not just cast the spell on me, I get an error about bad target, or target not a friend or some such....

Right-click on the hotbar button, choose Create Macro... and in the macro window, enter your own name in the Target text box. You will want to drag another copy of the spell to your hotbar (unmodified) for use on someone else when you're not the MT. Btw, casting a group buff while targeting the monster should work fine during combat, but not when out of combat. So instead of creating a macro, you should be able to clear your target by pressing Esc, cast your buff, target the monster, engage in combat, and during combat use the buff without any retargeting.

the macros for targeting that you want are /target_self then the ability /target_previous et voila. You will target yoruself, cast the spell and switch back within the blink of an eye. a oneliner would be : ; target_self ; usea Whatever its called ; target_previous And if I understood the OP correctly, he wanted to use it to cast his blessing before he pulls, so he couldnt use implied targeting and cast it through the mob since the mob doesnt have him targeted.

Right click the spell you want to cast. Click create macro. Type in your name in the blank spot where it says target. Viola you know have a macro that will cast the buff on yourself without you having to change your target. no matter what you are targetting.

It works fine if you cast it pre-fight without the mob targeted or if you wait until you engage the mob to cast it.

It will not allow you to cast it if you have a mob targeted that is not engaged in combat with you.

Thanks to all for the replies. I used the advice above and now have a nice macro for this buff. The only time it got sort of clunky was when it wore off during combat, and it was a little cumbersome to target myself, cast buff, then target mob again. It's great, as mentioned, pre-fight, but on some long fights I need to recast it, since it only has 5 procs. The macro works great. I can cast it mid fight when all 5 procs are gone, then just hit a melee skill to re-target the mob I was engaged with. All is good....Thanks again!

There's a /useabilityonself command that will always cast a spell on yourself, regardless of your target.

I use that for my SK's "Blessing" spell that procs the lifetap on hit. Cast pre-pull, recast when it's out. Works nice!
