Been checking these out at vendors - and some of them say valid for a day. Does that mean that I'll spend some plat and only have the thing for 24hrs, before needing to spend the money again to get a fresh horse?

Nope horses can be summoned as many times as you want... but they like despawn after 24 hours. Then you can just summon em again.
