Ok, a bit of background: I'm not an MMO newbie. Played AC1, AC2, WoW, LoTRO, and a few others I probably wish I hadn't

I'm currently new to EQ2 and have a level 11 Paladin Dwarf. I've done a lot of the quests in Qeynos, Forest Ruins, Oakmyst, and surrounding areas. The basic problem is this: I can barely defeat a mob 1-2 levels below me. Mobs my level I can defeat maybe 20% of the time if I'm lucky, and never anything even 1 level above me. I use pretty much everything in my arsenal, including healing spells. All skills and spells are Apprentice II.

My thinking was that since I seem to have mostly level 1-5 gear, I just needed to upgrade that, but the items I can buy in the shops are level 1-2 only and worse than what I have. The items I see in the Broker are all way beyond the 30 or so silver I've accumulated.

So, any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Did I miss something important such as training skills or something like that?

Any and all help is appreicated.

Most of us could prolly do it. What server are you on?

I'm on Everfrost. I think the issue is really one of DPS. By the time I'm dead after a 1 minute fight, I may have taken 20-30% off of the mob's health. So, even if I was solid as a rock, it would still take me at least 5+ minutes to kill the mob...which seems a tad long for a DPS class to kill a solo mob at the same level.

Well, I am a newbie as well. But I noticed that upgrading my skills to Apprentice IV helped a lot in terms of damage with my Shadow Knight. You can make the upgrade items (dunno what is the correct term for it) yourself as an artisan and common materials. If you don't want to get a tradeskill just ask a friendly alchemist to make it for you. New equipment should help as well. Again if you don't want to get a tradeskill just ask a friendly outfitter to make a new set of armor and a weapon. Hope that helps.

Alchemists will help ya make them.

Upgrading your combat arts is a big deal. App 2 is just something they offer to get your started. You will survive longer if you can upgrade to App 4, Adept 1 or even that rare Master 1.

Armor is not such a huge issue, as some of the newer starting gear they have brought in is quite nice until your late teens now.

Have you done any of the quests to get upgrades to your armor? Or harvest stuff so that you can use a tradeskill to make more armor and weapons for yourself?

I remember thinking it was too easy with my dwarf pally when I started out, so you must be missing something. Use those heroic opportunites too!

Good Luck,

Sadly, where paladin dps is concerned, this comic says it all:

A combination of gear and spell/ability upgrades required. You will have to face up to the "high" prices on the broker. This is simpler than it would seem - if an adept 1 for your spell/ability costs 4 gold on the broker, cheances are that similar ones for other classes sell for a similar amount. Go and kill 20 trash mobs - you should get a few adepts or treasured armour pieces etc. Put them on the broker yourself and sell them for those same "high" prices. After you have sold two, you will have enough to buy your adept + change. Never, ever sell an adept or treasured item to a vendor! Don't feel sorry for the other new chracters and sell cheap - the items will be picked up by a market watcher and repriced.

Better still - get your harvesting skills up (practice) and mine some ore and rare loams - get a crafter to make you some gear and Adept 3's.

Make sure you are only fighting the solo mobs, if you are fighting any heroic mobs then yes you most definately will have trouble.

There are two ways to see the mobs level and whether its heroic or not, one has arrows and tells you solo or heroic, the other has curly brackets round th mobs name, getting curlier as the mobs get tougher (ie, heroic, epic etc) - personally I've always used the one with arrows and words - the option is somewhere in the options screen, but cant remember where.

But yeah, at level 11, still wearing level 1 armour will make it more tricky.

I've been having the same problem with my level 11 Wizard. I've realised it's because I haven't upgraded any spells. I wasn't aware I had to. I'm too used to WoW where you don't have to chase after things.

Upgrading armor with quests or getting some crafted armor will help a lot (they will also have stats on them that can increase your DPS a bit...ie. STR and INT for you). Harvest for rares to get a rare set made if you don't want to spend much coin. If not, the common set should be fine anyway....you could make them yourself with a little time put in as well.

Harvesting rares and upgrading your Spells/Combt arts will help as well...even if it's just a couple of the most powerful/often used ones.

Sell your adept and non-useable armor drops on the broker...other classes and transmuters will buy them and you will have some decent coin in no time.

Paladins can put out some respectable DPS for a plate tank class...generally more AOE type fights with particular AA specs and "DPS gear"...generally though, Pallies are known for their longer fights and lower DPS.

Good luck.

As a tank class the most important thing you need to do is keep your armor and weopons upto date, if you are using lvl 1 armor on a lvl 10 toon you are basicly not waring armor at all. Same goes for weopons, though to a lesser extent. If you can't find the quests that give you upgraded armor then you will have to buy it unforunatly from th broker and it can be very expencive, though if you explain your a new player I am shure some High lvl Armersmith may help you out, especally if you get them the Raw materials they need.

Thanks, all, for the replies. I was able to get a decent weapon from the broker and already I'm seeing a big difference. Targ, that's very generous of you...I may just take you up on that offer

Gumdoc

You aren't doing anything wrong. Classes are weak and it only gets worse. However compaired to other mmo's if you think of the con levels as one higher (greens here are blue on another game, blue = white, ect), it helps a little.

At your level you should be able to find them extremely cheap on the broker. If you're using a slashing or piercing weapon, search for "Temper" and if you're using a crushing weapon, search for "Binding". These add various "procs" to your weapon that will do additional damage while you're fighting.
