I know this sounds super noobish, but I have seen this word used all over the place and still have no idea what it means.

I even looked in the abbreviations section of FAQs, but it didn't have it either. So, what is a "proc" anyways?

Proc comes from Process. Originally when an effect that is part of an armor weapon or item activates, it was said to "process". Over time, this was shortened to "proc", but the meeting remained the same: an effect linked to an item activated. So when you have a weapon, for example, that has a 1.8 "proc" chance per minute, it means that the effect attached to that weapon will activate roughly 1.8 times every minute.

Proc = Activation of an effect that is part of an item, armor or weapon.

Ill try and explain, I may fail and confuse you more but it's worth a try...

A proc is..... Nuts ill start again.

When you read an item or spell that says "on a successful attack this will cast "insert spell name here" on target doing xxx - xxx heat damage, this will trigger 1.8 times a minute"

This is a proc... things will change such as the type of damage and amount and the "spell name" there are "procs" for things like stat boosts and other effects. But it's all the same really.

It isn't just limited to items with special effects. Anything with a description that says something along the lines of "12% chance to do additional (X type) damage on a melee attack" or "8% to chance to snare target when damaged" or "does additional (y type) damage 2.0 times per minute on a successful hostile spell" etc is a proc.
