So, I've waited, and waited, and it's been two years, and this product, which is paid for every month via subscription, STILL isn't functional. From my home machine it's hit-or-miss at best. From my laptop at the house the same story - generally requires several attempts before it works, when it works at all. From my office network, it flat out doesn't work. This application isn't remotely proxy aware, doesn't follow proxy settings in the browser, and doesn't seem to have any facility for being proxy-wrapped. Doesn't matter if I'm using IE, Firefox (shown), Opera, Safari (Win32), it doesn't work.

Well, call me lucky then. It started working about a month ago from me. I can use this from work computer or either of my three home computers. I don't know what made it work, but one day figured I would try it again.....and there I was in guild chat. I'm not using firefox though, just IE 6 & 7.

Yeah when I started working here (SOE) back in June we narrowed down the issue to affecting two servers (Mistmoore and Splitpaw) this seems to be a different issue as I was able to log into the Unrest server with one of my characters and use th guild chat features with my player account just fine. Some info that I would need to track this down would be exact time you tried to log in and it gave that specific error. That way we can thumb through the logs and try to figure it out. meanwhile we are checking everything else out to make sure nothing failed.

Gninja wrote:
Which server are you on?
Main is on Guk, got a few alts on Perma, can't chat on either one so doesn't seem to be tied to a specific server.

and what guilds are you trying to talk to? It isn't server specific we narrowed it down that far already but we can search logs quicker if we know server names and guild names Try to log into it now. Note the time you get the error then post back here and give me Server name you tried, Time, and Guild you tried to log into. That should give us everythign we need to track it down. Thanks!

Are you trying to access it through a Web Proxy by chance?

Guild chat is a java and/or flash app, right? It opens non HTTP/HTTPS connections. Of course it's not going to work behind a work proxy. Most firewall/proxy setups installed at an office restrict internet traffic to just a few ports (ftp, ssh, pop3, smtp, http, https).

If that theory were to be borne out, then I wouldn't be able to get things like these to run (transparent proxying ftw)

Trillian

Teamspeak

Ventrilo

EQ2MAP (the updater)

Now, while the last one uses http/https, the remainder of those most assuredly do not, and all of them can be tunnelled through the proxy servers.

If the Host that creates your Session is an HTTP proxy the server will not let you log in. It sees this as a user trying to login with n invalid session ID. So in short you will not be able to access the Online Guild Chat through an HTTP Proxy.

I had a number of problems when I used to play on Guk with getting the guild chat to work. Once I transferred all my toons to Kithicor to join a different guild, my problems disappeared...it was pretty much the same for me, except I would just get "undefined" in the box instead, or I would log in and nothing would be listed in the pane that displays who's on. Anything I typed wouldn't actually make it into the game...it was spotty for a few months, then just stopped working all together at one point for a very long time...I came from Toxxulia when the servers merged...that's about the time I started having trouble...so it might just be an issue with certain servers/server merge combinations for some people?

Works ok for me now, every once in a while I get a hiccup and just refresh my browser and try again, but it's pretty rare for it to not work for me.

So am I to take it that SOE has no plans on adding a wrapper or something to guildchat that will enable it to at least use IE's proxy settings? As stated earlier, most chat programs have no problems with this, it seems to be just this one page that needs fixing to allow the subscribers to access it.
