I have an idea but wanted to post bits and pieces here to see what the response would be without giving away my whole idea as I am a writer and have created stand alone mods for other games before. Some of you may have played the Dreadnaught mod I created for Morrowind, I still receive requests for it via e-mail today.

My idea is simple but could open up an entirely new direction to go for the inhabitants of Norath.

Rumors abound about the background of Lucan D'Lere as he appears to have come out of nowhere as a dominant and carismatic leader with no apparent lineage. Even though he was in EQ1 there is no information on who he really is or where he came from, his past is a blank slate which makes a very nice place to enter new storylines. Instead of going into new areas of Norath suppose we could take it into the past in order to safeguard our future.

Scenario:

When searching the castle in Nariak a traitorous Dark Elf accidentally stumbles upon an ancient text written in a forgotten or unknown language, thinking that they may be able to use this as a bargaining chip if the betrayal goes badly they take it with them and depart the city. During their time in Haven, dark images begin to form at odd times in the mind of this betrayer ... images of another world and someone that Lucan D'Lere is bowing in submission to. In order to rid themselves of these nightmarish images the betrayer seeks the aid of the Euridites. They begin researching all the ancient texts of their archives and the archives of every known race on Norath to find out if there are any records of a previously unknown race. They also begin sending their agents into every known ruins in Norath seeking more information. Then one night while running for his life of the agents stumbles upon the entrance to a previously unknown ruins and discovers a pictorial history of the origin of Lucan D'Lere ... he is no Lich and is not even a native of Norath and serves a darker and far more ancient power of unknown origin ...

I have the entire story in my head and I know pretty much how it will go and it will open up new races, armor, weapons, spells, abilities, mounts, quests, and much more. Consider a realm where the powers of a Lich are looked upon as the musings of a bumbling apprentice. This is the realm of the ancients and their dark powers are ...

If this is the wrong place to post this please advise me as I do not want to post it in the wrong place.

I can't say this is the wrong place, but you might also want to check out the lore portion of the forum. Some of the characters in EQ are rather iconic, and I can't think of anyone more iconic then the Overlord, himself.

Having played EQ1, and having written a fan faction what marginally included Luncan before he became the Overlord... there actually is a great deal of lore about the fallen Knight of Truth. I would ensure that I read up on his relations w/ the other Truth Knights/Marr Temple, the creation of the Freeport Militia, and what exactly was his relationship Opal Darkbriar (Dark Elf Innoruk follower or High Elf mage guild leader), before starting the story. Any of these areas might have existing lore that could come into conflict with your story.

However, if you do just want to create an (possibly) alternate path/future, the readers of this forum have proved most kind. They are quite accepting of the writter who strays from the EQ lore doctrine while pursuing a good story.

Well my piece I guess....

In my place I wouldn't mess with said personas like Lucan or Antonia. There is a lot of EQ lore out there that can be explored without touching the big guns out there. Now personally I don't really like even the concept of using the gods. Yet at the same time if you follow my storyline one of my side characters is the avatar of tranquility.

Now personally I fretted with the idea agonizing over the idea of putting the gods into my story. Which truth be told is something I'm not a fan of. But I had a sub plot to run and couldn't come up with any other way to do it so I ended up using Quelious in my story. Now I kept the role to a minimum but in the end I did include the gods in my storyline. In addition to that Antonia Bayle will be making an appearance as well either in the end of book II or the start of book III. (Granted Antonia is not going to talk to any of my characters nor even notice their presence because I make a point that my characters are not world shaping super uber best of the best kings' bow at their feet people. Tea just has a habit of being in places when big things go down)

So What I'm saying is that I using some of the taboo characters and lore is not a killer for a story but I'd exercise discretion as well. So long as your story is written well it is not a big deal but to have the main trust of your story being that Lucan is a tool for nefarious means eh... I wouldn't touch that so much.

But I've never been a huge fan of the god touched storylines. Having a character in your story smacking around Lucan like a little mailto:B@#$ eh. I just don't see how that all pans out. Now at the same time I'm not telling you not to write. I'd never tell anyone on here that they do not have the right to spin their tales. Merely I am urging that you don't go too overboard.

For a more complex storyline why not find out who the "leader" of the Freeport militia is and have them being controlled by some nefarious being. That way you're not stepping on Lucan's toes but at the same time you're getting your story told. Rather then by direct means perhaps said being is controlling the FPM and through them influencing Lucan? It's just a thought.

As to new spells, armor, weapons and the like, and this is just my opinion, I'd shy away from that. Instead of reinventing the wheel why not do some research and fins some obscure weapons/armor that already exist. I mean there has to be 10k items or something along that line already in existence. In addition to that as a storyline progresses there is a natural one upping. You get more and more powerful as you progress rather then starting at the peak and having no where to go to.

With spells on the other hand my recommendation would be to do something along that line of what I do in my story line. Never have I "Teaeran casts (using the combat art) flame arrow." I find that dull and lacking. Instead I have Tea concentrate and shot and arrow that catches aflame as it is shot. Same thing just instead of giving said spell a name why not just describe its effects. I mean when Tea uses path finding instead of quoting the combat art I have him imbued with the spirit of a wolf that wants to run and run and run. It's a throw back to spirit of the wolf from eq1 and also creates and aurora of something new. Kind of get at what I'm saying here.

There is no need to get into all of that. EQ has thousands of quests, hundreds of zones and millions of players. If you feel the need to create something the stands apart from everyone else then find some obscure quests/items/npcs. I guess that kind of wraps up what I was thinking.

Just keep in mind also that this is a place for you to express yourself through your own writings. It doesn't matter what valk, ekuthh or I think. You come and write here because it is a community of authors and those who enjoy the literary word. So write your story and [Removed for Content] anyone who tells you that you cannot. But also realize that you can always ask for advice here as well. That is what I took you post to be. Asking for advice as to a concept that you have. Give it a bit of finesse IMO and go for. and in the end if it is something that I don't care for; Who gives a flying (insert a variety of obscenities) what I think.
