tired of the argueing and have no idea about these 2 classes other than they ward so what are the pros and cons of the 2 classes?

Do you solo, small group, raid or plan to raid? Neither class is really better than the other. A lot will depend on your personal preference. For example if you plan to mostly solo a mystic has a slight advantage when compared to a comparably equipped Defiler due to our AA melee skills. Defilers are often wanted in raids MT group due to the raw HP they add to the tank and a couple of spells they have that are group only . Defilers are also somewhat rare (on my server) which makes them very sought after.

I'd say it depends on your raid make up and the quality of your defiler compared to your mystic. Generally speaking I'd say one in the MT group and one in the offtank group.

A subpar defiler is going to be worse in the MT group than a good mystic, despite the straight HP buffage.

Also if your MT isn't way about the point of diminishing returns the mystic might buffs might be just as useful as the straight HP stuff from the defiler.

Since both bolster(mystic) and soul ward (defiler) are castable across raid neither of those should be factored into group placement.

I've yet to have a situation where there was actually a defiler on the same raid as me, so I can only speak in theory, but if both the mystic and defiler are equally good at their class and the tank would benefit more from the direct HP buff than the stat buffs a mystic can give then I'd probably stick the defiler in the MT group.

Can anyone tell me who is better versus named mobs or general solo questing?

For soloing and killling named mobs, it's probably best to go with a defiler. I know a mystic has a fantastic melee AA line, but when I was a defiler, I wasn't so hard pressed to live. Defilers definitely do more DPS and they have a Soul Ward in their AA line that really helps solo (yes, just throw it on before you enter a battle and heal yourself up, you have 190% more HP, basically). They also have more warding ability anyway, I miss curse of shielding. Defilers also have MUCH better in combat regen (Forced Canabalize and Canabalize FTW). Honestly, though, I think either a mystic or defiler will do a fairly equal job, you just have to remember both of our ways of fighting is to bore the mob to death by living so much longer than any other class and taking very little damage.

This is a question that I have been struggling with also, and although I believe I have an answer I would like some confirmation. I like to play a Shaman, but more than that I would really, really like to play a Melee/Pet class. It seems that the Mystic, going down Combat and STR lines, would be the closest that EQ2 has to this- correct?

Neither one has a huge advantage over the other. Both classes kill rather slowly unless you have taken the EOF combat line as a Mystic

You should take a look at the details there. http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/...topic_id=373749

I don't have that on my ranger so I can't tell you if it is at all useful.
