The scout classes would be your starting point: assassin, brigand, and swashbuckler. But similar to a ninja in what way?

A stealthy warrior with deadly moves, much like a ninja. Been wondering about maybe the Assassin is the most ninja like class in EQ2, so maybe i'll give that a spin.

How is the solo ability of the assassin compared to other classes?

The things with soloing an assassin are: (1) adds = death, and (2) if it's hitting you, you're doing it wrong.  With judicious use of stunning and stifling, and appropriate poisons (power drain and lifetap poisons are very handy) you can take down some pretty powerful stuff very quickly.  It just takes some time to learn how.
