Hello all. Not sure if anyone ever suggested this but here goes.

What if bookcases behaved much like containers... Right-clicking or double clicking would open them up much as a bag/container is opened. You could then slot your books in the bookcase. It would be very easy to store the books in the bookcases, removing the tedium of trying to place them correctly.

But I want to see my books... I can hear you say. No problem. They already have this kind of thing in game. Cellus Family Bookcase, if I remember correctly and others that I cannot recall at the moment. It has grafix of books when you set it up in house.

Sooo...when you place a bookcase in your home, it would look much like it does now, but with some books grafixin it. You could then open and store books in this bookcase much like a container. When someone visits your home, mayhaps they could right-click on bookcases and get a menu type list of books that are in that bookcase.

Anyway just a thought. Tell me what you think.

Since they don't count against the room anymore I don't see much issue with it and it could also be a good way to differentiate bookcases beyond just looks and status

I actually suggested this a few months ago. I think it would be a great addition to the game and allow some flexibility on exactly how many quest books appear as objects in our house, because even though they aren't counted, they still must be rendered. I like having a few books on my desk or a shelf, but I would like an option to store some of them like this. Especially the ones that look quite ugly. I also wonder why more of the single books don't have attractive bindings or colored covers. Some in a nice red or blue would look nice. Or why some of the stacks can't be shorter stacks, not the tall ones. But maybe this paragraph is more appropriate to 'Look and Feel' than tradeskill.

My idea for this would be that the player-made and quested bookcases that already have fake-books in them could be made into containers for books and the bookcases with no fake-books in them could be left as is.The bookcases that would be made into containers when clicked upon would open up an npc vendor window (like when you're buying something from an npc) except no coin is listed and instead of a "buy" button, you have a "read" button and the "sell" button is made into a "close" button. People would select which book they'd like to read and either double click on the name of the book or (especially if it would require rewritting a lot of code) just hit the "Read" button and it opens up the book for you to read.To fill this bookcase/container, you would right-click on the bookcase and select from the list, "manage" which would open up a window similar to what is used for the guild bank. You would have a certain amount of slots and could place books in it accordingly (20 sounds good. Would recommend 30. Either way, all of these bookcase containers should have the exact same amount of slots. That way people will continue to buy them with their looks in mind..the fact that books can be stored in them like a container will just be a nice bonus). You would also be able to set a name for the label of the bookcase so if you were to hover the mouse pointer over this book case, you would get that info window (like the "Name's Salesman's Crate" info window that pops up when ya hover the mouse pointer over it). * Wishful thinking...not a big thing but would be a nice touch. All in all, this change could make both camps happy. Both the ones that like to place books and objects on shelves themselves, and those that like the look of the bookcases with books/objects already embedded in them. Would also help to reduce lag and load times in homes with many books (that much less to load and render).

I hate the current state of book cases - I can NEVER get them placed right... I would very much like to see book cases become containers that would actually hold the books and then just be a nice graphic of a filled book case.

This has been suggested so many times I have lost count. If there is a technical limit why this cant be done it would be nice to just let us know so we would quit asking for it.

So what it sounds like you are really asking for is something that behaves like a house vault slot for books where the books count for status and count towards the total number of items in the house. Add to that a view only link on the door so visitors can see what your books are and you would only need to keep out the fancy coffee table books.

Don't know about the other person but my idea doesn't include books counting for status reduction while being stored (not that I'm aware that any books ever counted towards status whether it adds or subtracts from it). And from what I've observed, most if not all books do not count towards the total amount of items placed in the house..which is something I wouldn't want changed. And the view function would be on the bookcase itself, not on any doors..cause if you had to click on the door leading outside to view the contents of a bookcase, that would be confusing.

What I am trying to suggest is more a mechanism for getting the container functionality in the game than the specific UI. For instance, having a single house container that is accessed from any bookcase in the house might be much easier to implement than having a whole new set of container items are placed in the house (a new concept).

I may be remembering the few exceptions as far as status granting books. I haven't blown the dust off my book collection in a long time to see what is there and many of my books are pre-fix on counting as house items.
