I played a tamer in UO for about 4 years and 2 years as a Creature Handler in SWG. My husband and I have just recently joined EQ2 and I was wondering what classes are toting the different pets. We almost went with EQ because it had a kind of Beast Lore class, but EQ2 sounded like it was more what we had in mind. So, which class in EQ2 is the most "pet" orientated?

We have seen many people walking around the city with their pets, but so many people are marked as "anonymous" that it is hard to compare the classes. From what I have been reading, Conjurers just have the elementals and Coercers only have there pet temporarily for a short time.

I saw somebody with a green beetle on Queen's island and I saw a ranger with a pet eagle! The high-end pets I have seen almost look like they are duplicated from some kind of mob monster... is this a permanent pet for the Coercer? Also, I saw several little baby lions following people around... what class are these from?

The true pet classes are Necromancer/Conjurorer, Illusionist/Coercer. A bunch of other classes have pets but they are extremely weak and some are just fluff (for looks).

And only the summoners (necro/conj) gets buffs and stances for their pets. the other two have only 1 real pet, or charms mobs to get a pet.

Welcome to EQ2 Kritterly

As an old beastlord from EQ1 I was sad that they didn't have the same in EQ2 but there are classes that have pets.

Conjurers have a variety of pets. They change depending on the spell level.

Necromancers also have undead type pets... except we get a bat starting out.

Illusionists get copies of themselves with some of the same spells. It's almost like duoing while you solo. Very nice dps help.

Coercers get to charm critters and such. Not sure if they get a "pet" spell.

The birds, wolves, cats, dogs, pigs, lions, mushrooms and assorted other varmints you see following people around are either "fluff" spells (ie wizards get a cat. Doesn't do anything. Just for looks), OR...

there is a new skill advancement available to people with Kingdom of Sky and Echos of Faydwer expansions that allow them to put points into skills. One of those is a focus-type "pet". It can help you in a fight and it also provides you with buffed stats as long as it is alive. It's a nice plus.

I'm sure I missed some, but that is a start.

Yes, I miss my beastlord terribly but I like EQ2 enough to make me stay here.

Janali Spiritfist, EQ Vah Shir beastie

Phayd Dyre, EQ2 Wizzy extraordinaire

The true pet classes are Necromancers and Conjurers. Illusionists have a pet which is a replica of themselves, coercers must 'charm' a pet they find out in the world. With Coercers, there is a chance that the pet will break charm and turn on you. Pets for Illusionists and Coercers (IMO as a 70 Illusionist) are only good to use during solo or duo play. When you get in a much larger group or raid, the concentration points used by illusionists and coercers are much better spent improving the attributes of other players in the group. If you want to play a class that is all about the pets, I would recommend conjurer/necromancer.

Conjurors/Necros summon a magical being to do their bidding. The Conjuror's starts out as a big beetle, I think necros start with a spider. They upgrade as you level to bigger and badder critters.

Illusionists cast a mirror image of themselves. (Don't have much experience with this one).

Coercers are able to charm/coerce MOBs into being their "pets". I'm not sure of the restrictions on what you can charm as I am new to the mage classes, but the spell my newbie Coercer has limits it to a few levels above her. It's fun to pick any critter around you to charm, but they do break out of the spell after a time and you have to kill them, run or re-charm them... preferably before you die yourself.

Hope that helps.

I miss my old Beast Lord. There is an option for making a pseudo-BL in EQ2, but it only works for the Player vs. Environment game (tried it in PvP and got a royal smiting). You can make a Druid and work one of the AP lines (achievement points) and through the stages you get a Calm Animal spell and then a Charm Animal spell. 15 minute duration, you just root & recast when they break free or it wears off. It takes a little while to get enough points that you can fill a secondary line, but it was interesting for a while.

The limitations that coercers have on charming mobs are generally: No names No epics In addition, there are mobs that are not charmable because they are not in great numbers and they are used in a quest. Or they are part of a scripted ring event, and rather than rework the way ring events work the devs made the mobs immune to charm instead. Or there is no discernible reason why the mob is uncharmable, but it is. (me bitter? of course not ) Coercers can try to charm anything else. As the mob level gets higher than the coercer's level, the mob has a greater chance to resist the charm outright, and to resist at checks every so often while it is charmed, so something that cons red to the coercer isn't going to be charmed for long.

Actually the cat on very rare occasions is known to fight back if attacked, actually fights pretty well. I have had it happen a few times in a group encounter and the cat did not get killed. Parsed pretty high too.

I've had a lot of fun playing my conj. With the different pets and abilities we get we can use a lot of different play styles. They do very well solo or in a group. Necros seem very good too. Some of the undead pets look really cool. Wish I could get one.

So the eagle was a AA pet for rangers? Can the AA pets help fight or really just there to give the buff?

I got a pet monkey, but it says that it is a "house pet"... that bites!

How do you know what your fluff pet will be? is there a list of fluff pets for each class? Can a fluff pet help fight at all? How do you get a fluff pet?

Oh, and what about the flying books? Is that a pet? who gets that?

Fluff pets can fight back if they are hurt but generally if they are hurt they are dead. They do very little damage (1 maybe). Fluff pets are bought from merchants, my Wizard bought his from the Mage Academy. http://eq2.wikia.com/wiki/Pets

The eagle is not an AA pet, it's the lvl 20 fluff pet, assassins get a giant rat, not everyone gets a pet: Pallies/SKs get a horse, temps get a stupid spell that forces group members to bow to them (sounds more like something an Inq/Coercer would have)

Every class can get a pet, if they sell their souls to one of the gods they get a buff-pet around 49-55

And there are plenty of other pets you can get from quests: baby owlbear (starts at Darklight Woods fair), duck (fairly simple quest in Steamfont) & mushroom (part of Splitpaw) (mah assassin currently has the giant rat/duck/diety-mummy that follow her around, the duck has actually saved her life a few times by pecking the mob and drawing aggro )

But usually its useless

No one has mentioned that Defilers and Mystics also get a pet. It used to look like a ghost wolf, now it just looks like every other wolf running around Norrath. But it is a true pet, it will attack mobs if ordered (and die in 2 hits, but thats beside the point...) .

Mine still looks like a ghost dog and unfortunately it still dies after 2 hits, or 1 AE spell...
