Sorry if this has been posted before, but maybe we might get some crossbows in the expansion. I finally found one...chances are there are a bunch in the game but this is the first I've seen since launch.

Its highly unlikely.

Wildmage wrote:
Its highly unlikely.

You know... every time someone makes a post like this and I respond like you just did... I turn out to be wrong. When people kept requesting epic weapons I was the first in line to say "its highly unlikely", but the devs have stated that their will be epic weapons with the next expansion. When people would say they want to sell from multiple characters on the same account I would say "its highly unlikely" and then the next week the devs would announce that all characters on an account will be able to sell simultaneously.

So this time around I'm going to say your "highly unlikely" is highly unlikely. How hard would it to be to add to the game? The graphic and animation wouldn't be hard. The game mechanics are already inplace for ranged weapons like bows. I think the odds of us seeing useable crossbows at some point in the future is fairly good.

If so I'm making a new guard named Rambo and duel wielding those puppies like M-60s.

Only thing I've seen thats even close to a crossbow are some of the tinkered items have a crossbow looking icon.

The game dynamics would be the same and the technology is certainly in line with the lore of the game. There are clockworks for crying out loud! We can't even produce a clockwork with RL technology yet we can make nuclear bombs, space shuttles, and microprocessors. I think the gnomes can handle a crossbow =p

I think the difference with crossbows is the damage. Crossbows, as opposed to regular bows, do not hit harder/do more damage with more strength. You don't pull them back farther for more distance. They tend to always fire the same distance, with the same velocity as the previous arrow.

That being said, I think it would be neat. Give the mages a crossbow to use, with a long delay to reload, where damage doesn't rely on strength. I suppose leave crits in for accuracy/shot in the eye, but the damage should be almost the same every shot. You can even take it a step further and tinker a faster reloading "auto crossbow".

They don't even have crossbows in EQlive. They added a no-class no-race crossbow weapon to the Thurgadin guards in Velious, but nobody can use them.

crossbows were originally planned for eq2

I just don't think this can be written off as "highly unlikely". It may or may not happen. Only time will tell, but I would give it decent odds since it's certainly plausible.

I would love to see Xbows. I had a xbow main in AC1 and loved it. I also think it should be a new class for Evils because Evils don't have a pure bow class to compete with Rangers. My guess is why they are not in game is the animation would be so slow that it would look bad. They would have to have damage like a Wizard with huge slow "nukes".

You do realize that if they are going to be accurate to RL that a crossbow would take about as long to load as a Musket... about 4 bolts a min. They where basicly made so the UNSKILLED footsolder could fire with the same lethality as the British Longbowmen...who where using long bows from the day they could hold one.

And considering the realism of bow techniques in this game, we would certainly expect crossbows to adhere to the same rigid standards!

They were not created for the UNSKILLED footsoldier but rather as a part of pyschological warfare. Approaching enemy forces would be disuaded from attack by the sheer volume of projectiles hurtling at them. This was a top down gravity fed mechanism and as soon as I can find my old post abuot the same topic, I'll post it. Yes the longbow is better ranged, but not particularly more or less lethal, the longbow is just suited to a greater range in combat.

Chiming in here as well... The English longbow's advantage over the crossbow was a faster rate of fire, and slightly longer range. Of course, then they started making crossbows with steel bows that required a stirrup and winch to crank back, so the advantage of range was slight. Penetration power against plate between the two was nearly identical... so similar as to make little to no difference in the battle, especially to the person who got shot. The advantage of the crossbow is that it requires far less skill to fire and, especially when assisted with the hand-winch, much less upper-body strength to pull. The repeating crossbow worked very well against unarmoured peasant levies, but the bolt was rather lightweight, and did not fare well against armour of any kind. Still, if they wanted to make it simple, a crossbow is a simple graphic change. Give it a narrower damage range, and the 7 second delay that many of the heavier bows in-game already have. Perhaps increase it to 10 seconds as a trade-off to the tighter damage (ie, if a bow does 75-100, the same tier crossbow does 90-100) range.

I know a certain forum poster that would have a field day with those autoattacks.
