Can anyone give me some basics about batrayal? can you convert fully to the other side and what are the drawbacks and advantages?

Yes, you can convert fully to the other side.  Long term drawback is basically non.  Short term drawback is that you have to learn your new class and all your skills revert to app1.

Yes it does automatically change. You can even change between neutral classes (eg Dirge ---> Troub). You cannot stay an evil class when betraying to a good city and vice versa. Your Spells get reseted when you speak to your new class trainer after completing the membership quests in the new city. Edit: You can only change within your chosen class: Shadowknight <---> Paladin, Assassin <----> Ranger etc.

In relation to this... is there a level cap to betrayal? I thought at one point you had to do it by level 20, but I can't remember if that was part of game mechanics or just a recommendation for when it would be easiest.

There is no level cap, but you have to be at least level 10 to do it.

There are lots of threads here that provides good info on betrayal, including links to actual quest steps. Do a quick search in this forum on betrayal, you'll be glad you did. Betraying is far from easy, and takes a long time (took me all weekend), and can be very frustrating, especially if you don't know all the facts beforehand.
