Ok, so I finally decided to get off my butt and work on tinkering. I have 3 level 70 TSers, a mid 60s, mid 50s, and a couple 30s, so I know EQ2 primary tradeskilling by heart. I started out as a tinker making Miscalibrated Gnomish Crosstrainers. First combine I got a skill up, and the second combine I got a skillup. I'm now sitting at 3/350 skill. I made 12, count 'em 12 more Crosstrainers, and no skill-ups at all. The recipe is currently listed as Hard (orange), and I was under the impression that the skillup chance was roughly 50% unless you were making low grays. If it is around 50%, the chance of going 12 combines with no skill-ups is very very small. Is this normal? Or did I hit the RNG equivalent of winning the lottery (as far as overall chance of it happening)?

I don't really know what my longest dry spell on non-gray recipes was, but after after my first stretch of 8 nothings, I stopped paying attention. I would just stock up on the ingredients for grinding and pretty much read the various chats without paying any attention to what was going on with my skillups. Once I had used up my stack of 50 leaded loams (or whatever), I would check the level I finished at as opposed to the one I started at.

So I dunno if 12 on an orange recipe is a record or not, but I know that long and irritating dry spells do happen. I haven't tinkered in over a month, though, so you might want to check with some folks in game to see if they're having similar problems.

Lately the RNG has seemed to get very mean. I have had more "really bad" streaks lately than normal. But yah .. 12 combines with no Skillup can and does happen.

Dry spells like that happen all the time ... I hate it alot ... makes me angry when I have no time to spare and waste my resources, but oh well.
