Hi everyone! I'm new to the world of Norrath, only been playing a week or so, but I'm enjoying it immensely. I'm from Austria, but after reading about the horrible localization i decided to play on Runnyeye instead of the german servers. The community so far has been very nice, certainly a big difference compared to WoW. I'm still trying out many different classes, but so far I like my Arasai Necromancer the best, since it resembles the class I played in WoW the most (dots and pets - I played a Warlock). Yesterday I entered Neriak for the first time and it was quite impressive and beautiful. But with moving into my first inn room und acquiring a city quest (I guess they're called writs) some questions have come up. I understand that I can gain status points by completing writs, but is it true that I have to be in a guild to spend them on items? Moreover, if my guild is qeynos-based, can I still earn guild status points by completing "evil" writs? Also is there a notable difference between the cities? I've read that one can put a sort of container in one's room and people can come over and buy things directly from the container so they don't have to pay the broker's fee. So if I reside in Neriak, will fewer people buy from my room, just because there are a lot more people say in Qeynos or Freeport? Or do most people buy just from the broker and don't bother to run to the seller's house? Lastly, can good players even buy from evil players via the broker? The auction system is certainly a bit more complicated than in WoW, still haven't it figured out completely. Any help will be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance, Mac

Hi there and welcome to Norrath - nice to see more people from Austria, would love to answer in german but think most can't read that I play on an american server, its nice to meet people from all over the world, I didn't like to "only" meet european ones. You can be in good or evil aligned guild, doesn't matter at all, you can earn status for both. These writs you do count for your personal status first, 10% will get added to your guilds status if you join one. You can also spend your status points without being in guild, but there is a difference in price for horses, rooms and such, guilded people get these a bit cheaper. These in-house containers to sell from are not a must at all, maybe later when you are going to sell a lot of and expensive stuff. Most people just buy from the broker, and this can be done from every city. What you need are boxes or bags in your vault slots, these you can access by either clicking on a broker or the door in your room. Everyone can buy from every city (not sure on PvP servers, think there will be restrictions), it's just a difference on the broker's fee. Lets say when you live in Neriak and buy something from a player in Qeynos, the broker's fee will be 40%, if the seller lives in Neriak it will be 20%. Hope that helped a little bit P.S.: If you need help ingame, just send a /tell to butcherblock.jaidee, also possible to have people from other servers in your friendslist. My german is still way better than my english

People will want to come to your house directly if the item costs a lot. That generally won't happen till you get up to higher levels, as the previous poster mentioned. Once items get into tens of gold or platinum then the broker fees start making a difference. I've had characters start in all four starting cities, and I would say Neriak is the least convenient of all of them, but from a Lore perspective there is a good reason for that. If you sealed yourself off from the rest of the world for 500 years and only recently connected to the surface again, travel to and from your city is not going to be efficient.

I just want to mention that many players have low level toons with some cash set aside in each city so they can go to a house and buy and item if they want to save the broker fee.

If there's something I want badly enough in qeynos I have a guardian who lives there and I use the guild bank to transfer coin to him and he buys the item for me.

City Merchant items usually require a guild level to buy, but I believe you can buy from the Faction Merchants of the 4 City Guilds without being guilded.
