I am new to the game, but not new to MMOs and PvP servers. I will be playing on a pvp server and disabling combat xp (at least the majority of the time). I want a tradeskill to make soloing (and pvp) easier. I am deciding between Armorer(chain mail), Weaponsmith(DW weapons), Jeweler (scout skills+jewelry), and Alchemist (poisons mostly). What would you describe as most beneficial to solo PvE?

Also, being my first toon, do you recommend getting into secondary trade skills right off the bat? I want to be able to afford to buy things still, and the tinkerer doesn't interest me too much. I was considering transmuting, but it may be more expense than what it's worth for a first toon.

Of the choices you are considering, I believe you will find jeweler and armorer most useful.

Alchemist is a fun tradeskill and easy to level, but if you're mainly doing it for the poisons, you're probably wasting your time. Poisons are relatively inexpensive and last 12 hours, so I think you're better off buying them from someone else (unless you intend to make an alt fighter and use the alchy for ad3s).

Weaponsmith is currently the class I see the most complaints about from players. I don't hate the class as much as others do, but the WS adornments are quite weak compared to transmuter adornments, and mastercrafted weapons don't hold up well against loot drops later in the game. You would probably like this TS fine to begin with, but come to regret it later.

To return to jeweler and armorer, my own choice for a first TS character would be jeweler, hands down. It's great to have plenty of recipes, plus you will be able to make poisons for T1 and T2 (since jeweler lets you take alchy to T2).

Armorer will provide you with enough recipes to cruise to the high 20s (and give you access to some handy T2 tailor recipes), but thereafter it becomes one of the more painful classes to level (thanks to the shortage of recipes).

Bear in mind that crafting writs will soon provide tradeskill XP upon completion, so my concern about the number of recipes may be overblown.

As for your question about tinkering/transmuting, my advice would be to pick up transmuting ASAP. The small bags you are able to afford as a beginner won't hold much loot when you are out adventuring, and you can transmute treasured loot and adept1s on the fly to save space. Also, you will quickly find yourself outgrowing loot that you've attuned to yourself and that you will have to sell to the vendor for next to nothing unless you can transmute it. Even if you wanted to be a tinker, I would advise you to take transmuting to 100 first and then respec as a tinker. (T1 tinkering requires a ton of leaded loam that is usually overpriced and not as much fun to harvest as the devs seem to think, so I would save tinkering for when you have some disposable income. Transmuting is essentially "cost-free" until you hit 100 skill points--at which point it can become a huge moneysink.)

Best of luck.

Although poisons can last up to 12 hours, I go through one in less than an hour of steady killing (pve). They have 100 charges OR 12 hours on the caustic poisons so they don't last that long. Also, I spent 50 gold the day I hit 60 on my brigand to upgrade his poison (to normal, not mastercrafted) and that supply is dwindling very quickly.

I would also like to mention with poisons that on my pve server it's sometimes hard to find poisons in your current level range. I think you should check the broker and see if poison is something that's regularly stocked for all levels before deciding against alchemist. I'd suggest using the advanced search option to search for poisons between levels 10-19, and then 20-29 etc so you can see if there's stuff available up to 70.

IMO it's easier to get an armor or weaponsmith to one time craft you a suit of armor than it is to find an alchemist to make you poison on a regular basis when you run out.
