Just wondering, has anyone ever knocked up a miniature of their character?

What I mean is, the kind of miniatures for wargaming or tabletop-rpgs.

It's just that I'm planning on doing so myself. It's proved tricky to find an appropriate miniature, unsurprisngly, it'd be more odd to find something that did look like our characters all things considered. But, it's not proving impossible to find parts of a one miniature that look right for part of the character, and another model with another recognisable character part.

So I'm planning a conversion. An overall cloaked armoured body from one range, head from another, a buckler from another, a weapon would have to be made with plasti-card and putty, and even found a warg.

Anyone else given it a go?

Please post what you come up with.

Ive seen someone produce a model of a kerra I think but it wasnt Warhammer size, Im sure they posted it on here somewhere. It looked about 7 inches tall.

Im more into the soft toy repro myself but have considered making either a clay or plastic model of something (I think im going to do an imp - like the Sol Ro pet) or as you guys have talked about a conversion of another model.

Good luck and cant wait to see your results!

Mori

You could probably make a custom mini just from assembling different bitz of games workshop warhammer or lotr minis, and use green stuff modeling putty to fill in any gaps or cracks. A long while ago I was big into warhammer, and if you get their annual catalog, or use their website, you can buy individual parts from different sets to get what your looking for I think.

Yeah, I have the parts I'll be using, and they're mostly from Games Workshop as that's what I know and it's convenient to get. Been a miniature painter for 20 odd years now, and while it'd be tooting my own horn to say I'm good it'd be false modesty not to. *toot toot*

Will be using a LOTR Warg. Was gonna have the character mounted upon it, but now favouring the Warg arcing around the character instead. A helm from the marauder range is perfect for the zerker helm. The weapons will have to be made from putty and plasticard. And oddly, the body closest to useful for me has proved to be a vampires - the armour will need a few details shaved off, but it has a draping coat that could be presented as a cloak. I'm still looking for a better body though, and fit a more regular cape style cloak to it.

Plastic miniatures are easiest to work with for conversions - the material is easier to cut. And of metal miniatures, those that come in a few parts are better than those that come in one solid figure. But I think it's time I expand my body parts search to alternate miniature ranges, despite the models being harder to work with.

That is of course if I ever get around to it. If procastinating were an Olympic event I could get Gold for England, and then be late for the award ceremony.

Not sure how easy they are to get outside the US, but you might try looking at Reaper minis before you hack/slash up LotR & WH minis. They are mostly metal, so not quite as easy to alter, but they have an incredible selection of characters.

As a girl gamer (AD&D back in '84), I've suffered for years playing the 'chicks in chainmail' fighters or casters, which are fine for playing common raced girls...but if you ever play a dwarf, gnome or 1/2-orc (again D&D) girl, you are out of luck. WHen my hubby & I found Reaper in '00 I was thrilled I could finally play with a mini that sort of looked like a female dwarven priest, instead of the human girl in robes or the dwarven male.

Their line has expanded quiet a bit over the years, so my first and ONLY choice, if I wanted to create my Gnome SK girl, would be to look at Reaper. Granted that might be a bit odd even for them, but for almost any race but Froglock/Ratonga, you might get something 'workable' with Reaper.

if you are looking for somthing bigger then 25mm these figuers are much bigger and you can order the bits from each model if need be. Also they look great and are easy to convert. Also GW offers alot of tools that you can use to help alter your figs.

They have many just click HERE for the link.

It's GW stuff I've mostly painted (would have to be mostly for them, they paid me to do so for five years), but when I see a miniature from another range that screams for paint I have to do my duty. Can't begin to guess how many miniatures I filled the London stores with over the years, but still have a stack of full figure cases as tall as myself, and as much again waiting for any paint at all. I'll have to get busy with a decent camera one day.

Reaper can be hit and miss, but much more hit recently. Think I've found a few there that may have a good torso since being reminded about it - nice one, cheers for that. Of course, while looking I came across several other miniatures I liked that weren't immediately useful, but lush and demanding paint so I'll have to pick them up too.

If GW did a fantasy version of Inquisitor I dare say there could be some potential there. But with that much dark technology all over them the work involved could be too much as it is.

I've never been as good with convertings as painting - all that clipping, filing, pining, green stuff puttying malarky, 's'all proved a bit tricky to me. But needs must eh.

Well, if you do get around to making, we'd love to see some pictures, I don't really play any of the games anymore, but still get GW's magazine because I love seeing all the incredibly well made/painted mini's. In my height of collecting, I'd say I was a mediocre painter at best, so I love seeing the work done by those who are really good at it
