I was wondering if anyone know how much difference there is between the caster pets based on spell "quality".

Is there a notable difference between an Apprentice II version of "Summon XXXX" compared to Adept I version of the same spell?

I started playing EQII back at release but gave up after 3 months and went to another MMOG. Back then I remember the basics was explained that:

Aprentice I spell equal to Caster Level "-1"

Aprentice II spell equal to Caster Level

Aprentice III spell equal to Caster Level "+1"

Aprentice IV spell I dont think existed at that time

Adept I spell equal to Caster Level "+2"

etc etc etc

Is it still the same?

I don't know about dumbfire pets, but the summoners and illusionist pets the main effect is that the spells/combat arts that the pet does is equal to the pet spell quality level. I.e. A master pet uses master spells, a adept1 pet uses adept1 spells. This makes it quite big difference between the qualities (amount of resists and damage output).

Ah! Thank you, that seems logical when I think about it.

As a summoner most of your damage and/or survivability comes from your pets. I cannot emphasise how important it is for you to get all your pets (main pets first and then dumbfires (Ghastly Stench / Swarm of bats etc..) as high spell lvl as possible. generally speaking these spells should be your first upgrades. However, until you hit your 60's its probably not worth blowing all the money you have just to get master1 versions unless you can afford it because you can get through those levels pretty quickly. Ad3 is much more affordable and a minimum 'must-get' in my opinion. I actually managed to acquire master versions of all the pets until I hit 50 and then they were just too expensive for me (like master 1 caster pet 90 plat ! ). They made a big difference along the way though and certainly the necro masters look cooler than the AD3 versions.

A while back I did a comparison of a few different "levels" of the Necromancer mage pet. What I found was that the only difference between the pets ws how much damage they did with their skills. Everything else -- HP, Power points, Stats, mitigation. . . it was all the same. Here's the chart I made back when I did it:

Definitely worth getting though. I have the M1 tank pet with my necro and have to work pretty hard to get aggro from it. I can do it, just not as easily as with and Ad1 or Ad3. . . . his taunts are just that much better.
