View Full Version : How important is looks with your characters?

Basically I'm a player where, if I'm not liking the way my character is looking, I feel less inclined to play it. My necromancer in Neriak got a disgusting slime green robe and I haven't logged into her for weeks. I don't have much choice but to wear it because it has the better stats. I just can't stand adventuring in it. My coercer used to have a gross yellow and red robe so I looked pretty stupid and hated playing her, but after getting an purple looking robe that I'm liking I play her alot more cause I look cool now! (No I'm not a shallow person in RL I'm just like this with MMOs.)

I'm just curious if anyone else is like this or if I'm just a strange one lol. Are you fussy about how your character looks and will go to every effort to get the best looking stuff, or do you just slap on whatever, no matter how clownish you look, as long as its got good stats? Discuss!

Race looks first, armour looks second.

I'm vain as vain can be. In fact, one of the reasons i rerolled a 65 Shadow Knight was because I couldn't stand the way the mastercrafted vanguard looked in any way, shape, or form. If it looks silly, I won't wear it, no matter what stats it has.
looks > all But if your chasing stats too then give up now. I wore the barristers robe on my necro from 30-50 then the keepers robe till i got the black/red one in T7. I didnt wear my relic vest till i got a full set because with no robe to hide the missing parts it looked stupid. I also now always wear my vhalens set with ym dirge until i can find nightcord/relic boots to match the other relic/nightcord drops i have. I will switch as needed in raids but then thats when stats DO matter more than looks.

Looks are huge in how I play my toon seems a wood elf doesn't make a very sexy assassin so I'm burning though human bones untill I can get my lowbie human assassin leveled and geared.

To me, the look of my toon is pretty much all important. I don't have to have my dream look every time I sign in, but surely DO NOT want to think my character is butt ugly.

Quality and uniqueness of appearance is very important to me. Always has been. When I create a character I give them a specific personality and try to match their looks to that. Sadly... I have only limited tools to do so. I recently changed one of my character's hairstyle because everyone started to use the same style and similar color. It was kind of annoying standing in the bank and seeing clones of me. (Of course I'm sure the other people might have viewed me as the clone but when I chose that hair style it wasn't used very often.) None of my characters can dress the way they like (as I've said in numerous posts... though mostly on my other account which I've canceled). Probably never will, but one can hope.

I am a visual player. My character has to look a certain way or I will spend a fortune to get better looking armor or I just won't play it. I can't remember which set of armor it is but I refuse to wear it or at least the chest piece. The chest piece has a giant head on it, I guess it is suppose to look like a lions head but to me it looks like a perverted old man with his mouth open on my characters breast. It is just awful to wear and embarassing, LOL.

I think the game designers need to hire woman or something to get better feed back and idea's.

LOL! I've said that before. Yeah, I was so disappointed in the T7 leather armor. I look like I should be making deliveries for UPS! If they made woven dragon hide look like the woven engraved I'd have been happier!

To me, especially considering I play on the RP server, looks are on nearly even-footing with the stats or effects of gear... and if I have two items with nearly-equal stats, I will choose the better-looking of the two, even if it has the inferior stats. Unless, of course, it's a must-have worn/constant effect. Still, tying into the avatar thread, I'd prefer to have the option and ability to tailor the avatar's style to fit the character concept I have of her. In other games, with better graphics and a wider variety of clothing and armour styles, I will spend a king's ransom of currency on getting exactly the look(s) I want, both for combat and social situations. In EQ2, the best "social" outfit I've found for my Brigand, so far, is a pair of green Tradesman's leggings and the white undershirt....

The look of my character is extremely important and ,unfortunately in that regard, I play a fury. A fury is a druid and there is absolutely no resemblance to my class in the armor that is available. I honestly feel that the fury/warden classes look the worst of any in the game. I played a druid in EQ1 for over 4 years and hated the way my character looked there as well. I am not sure why there is such a lack of artistic thought / ability when it comes to creating suitable looks for druids. The wreath crown is an improvement over the dead animal helm, but even there, the males do not choose to wear it. The rest of the armor is just ugly. I would like a style that people look at my character and think "druid", instead of "well, that doesn't look TOO bad" (and that's only solace from my friends).

And no, I do not want to play another class. I enjoy the druid class over all others that I have tried. I also have a conjurer, a shadow knight, and a dirge...but my main love is my fury. I just truly would like to have a really unique "druid" look. I think the upcoming Kunark expansion would be a great time to introduce a new improved armor set for the druids of Norrath.

As long as my toon doesn't look as he just finish an amok run through a point shop I don't care much. Oh, and the weapons has not to look cartoonish (like the new hammer from SoD or 2H claymore and so on).

I play using the 3rd person view so as I'm sat there with my char on screen all the time, my char's appearance is most important to me. A couple of days ago I spent a fair amount of plat (for me) on upgrading my Shadow Knight's kit from tier 3 mastercrafted to tier 4. Even though the items are good for the character, I was pretty [Removed for Content] when I saw how many of them were identical to the items they'd replaced. Oddly enough I don't remember having that problem with my old bruiser or mystic.

Well one reason that makes me a little bit unstatisfied on both my swashbuckler and my bruiser... for my High elf swashbuckler its pretty difficult to get any gear wit good stats which isn't to dark(mccabes set, relic set..) something in white/gold/silver would be best, i found some nice items which are usefull for roleplay but pretty useless for a fight. At the moment i wear a mix which is at least silver/grey and doesn't look too bad.

My bruiser on the other hand.. well he is an ogre bruiser, but there is only on gi graphic which fits nice and i have to unequip hand armor to make it look right, all the other gis(including the shared eof armor set) fit better to monks and the other leather armors tend to get more and more hmm ornate? at higher levels so its difficult to find something that is usefull and rough.

I'm happy with my characters look, in the end, I created him and went to into more fining details when barbers introduced. Nothing is like Shroud of the Oak in a Wood elf, with a Gi of the Disciple (YES, SOGA SUCKS TO HELL)

I generally wear L30 guild formal male cloth, while I'm in city, or doing non-combat in any sort or change with different colors of tailored clothes or my special robe (only leather robe) in the end, it is just a click on a toolbar of chest plate to change entire look.

When I go for combat, I wear my best stat equipment, which I dislike by choice of colors (pink boots haha) but in the end, surviving is more important in combat so I don't mind. But my weapon selection is definitely for the look. I use dual-wield fist weapons because of monk fight stance (I can't stand bruiser stance btw), I used to love 2H bo-stick animations, but they are really low in number as tiers go up and mostly turns into "shovel" 2H animations. I'd prefer Katanas still

Because I don't wear my armor day & night everywhere to get ashamed of my look, I use clothing, people should do too, beside it stinks inside armor after combat with all those sweats.

Point and laugh at me if you want, but I'm still annoyed at the sudden, unexplained change to the dark elf nose graphics (in GU20something) that now makes my necromancer look like he got bricked in the face. So yeah, my characters' appearances are very important to me. Model weirdness and limitations aside, I love this game's character creation for allowing us to tweak so many details of our appearance. I will sometimes spend an hour on the creation screen, making sure everything looks right on a new character I'm playing, or just messing around with all the different options for fun. Armor graphics are also important, but I've grudgingly accepted the fact that I'm probably going to look ridiculous while doing any sort of challenging content. Staying alive is more important to me than looking pretty in those situations (admittedly only slightly more important, though :P). If my gear looks really terrible, I usually put on an illusion that makes it less obvious. I also switch to something matching when I'm messing around in town or doing easy solo/group stuff.

I have a battle between looks and stats but in the end looks win even if i die more. Some of the armours I like too much to change unless there is an alternative that is better *and* looks as good.

I've spent countless hours camping Captain Ursus in Kaladim to get the Gi of the Rockpounder Master just for this purpose. It isn't significantly superior to the mastercrafted I'm wearing now, but red is my favorite color! Starting to become a serious pain, however. I have seen more PHs and worthless treasured caps than I care to recount, and gained 3 levels in the process. Ahh, the sacrifices we make for fashion.

Lol, this is the perfect thread for me. I have been complaining for WEEKS about how my turquoise pants do not match the leather dragonhide mastercrafted set (which btw, looks like a farmer outfit). But of course, the stats are WAY better then the dragonhide pants, being fabled. Appearance is always my main focus, being a roleplayer. But if I know I'm somewhere someone might want to roleplay, I slap on some RP clothes. Who runs around in raid gear anyway?

I hate robes. Period.

Cloth armor choices are dreadful. I have a couple of characters that are WAY UNDER stat dressed just because I can't find something that I like with higher stats.

My character(s) are an extension of ME. I create each (yes I have all slots filled with "alts" with a story and want that character to Look like what I imagine they would look like. All of my characters are Human looking (Non-Critter) and Female. I have a couple with the Braid hair style as I love to watch the braid animation. I would adore to have a ponytail that swings or other hair movement available.

I couldn't figure out why I was not wanting to play my illusionist the other day - then I brought her into the game and paid 1 gold to get a makeover from the barber. I hated the way she looked! Not the way she fought or crafted - just the way she looked (and because she is an illusionist she is Double LOL). After her makeover I find I Like to play her again.

So - short answer - My Characters Look is VERY important to me

Oh - I also want some "happy faces" = all my characters look mean or sad - Please more mouth options!

VERY important. If I'm going to play a toon for hours and days and months, I need to feel like I fit in their skin.

Gear:

Being a PvP twink, I really should say that stats > looks. However, I really really don't like the look of the woven leathers that give the best stats for my main's class [warden] and will not wear the tunic or pants.

Also, I try on every robe I get and keep the ones that look cool. The rest, off to the transmuter.

My fury doesn't go out much and has a stunning golden robe.

My swash wears a yellow dress that brings out the color of her hair whenever she's in town.

My zerger regularly forgets to reequip her very stupid looking tower shield. It seems to have a hole in it where her hair pops through.

And so, mostly stats > looks, but not really. rofl. Wish they made some better looking armor sets and totally agree with bathrobe comments about mage's robes.

Race:

love the dark elves most of all. Hate aqua however, so mine are all that dark color in the brown zone

deleted the barbarian woman very quickly - just too big and lumbering and had this really stupid look on her face

kerra: really wanted a female kerra, but they just look too .... non-cat like

iksar: love how her hood flares when she fights, but really want to look better than this most of the time, so she's my only

fae: have a really cute looking white haired, black winged fae - love their dance too

arasai: yech. even if they didn't have to start in neriak I wouldn't want one

the other elves: ok, not bad, but not as nice as the dark elves

human: boring mostly

Customizing Features:

want more hairstyles, more colors

want to be able to adjust things and have the skeletal model actually work. ie) up or down turn nose - seems to be a very small range that doesn't give you miss piggy or a hooked nose

I have to agree 100 percent that looks affect how I feel about a character I made. I have a level 70 High Elf Wizard I hardly play anymore simply for the fact I dislike her looks. She is the first character I created when I started playing EQ2 over 3 years ago and now she looks like a giant next to any other female toon. She really looks out of place. I just wish I could make her smaller, I already have her as small as I can make her. I would probably deleted her except she also is a level 53 sage and I do not want to start that over. Maybe if we could change the characters race as long as we stayed with the same alignment.

Stats are most important to me. I'd like to look nice but if I can do fifty billion dps I could really care less what I look like. I'd wear an ugly piece of equipment with a slight upgrade over a good looking piece with slightly less stats.

Having to choose stats over look shows how messed up things are.

Look is highly important, so newb freebie starting burlap tunics and rusty knives are understandable. But, as we get higher and get better and better gear, things should look even nicer, cooler, mesh well together and blow us away!

Instead, we're stuck in this sad dilemma of having to choose one over the other, when that should never ever be the case in any mmo.

We can and should continue to demand to have the look AND the stats. We do not have to, nor should we, settle for less.

Looks are extremely important on my characters. First and foremost, the character itself. I easily spend 2 hours in character creation just to get the exact look I want. Then I will log in to see how it looks and log back out, delete the character, and start over if I have to So now I have my character perfected just how I want her and the next step? Picking a class and...ugh, the armor. The armor in this game it's pretty fugly and sure hurts 'coolness' factor a lot... o_O When I created my recent character I refused to play a cloth class just because the robes make her look fat. Sadly though, as I go through the game I have to sacrifice looking good if I want the benefits of good stats. So my characters starts out looking great only to eventually give in to better stat gear, end up looking like a clown, and then I'm miserable. I know, it sounds soooo petty. I just don't think it's too much to ask for my character to not only be a bad-a rse but to LOOK good while doing it! *EDIT* Whew, had to tone down that font color, I think my eyes are bleeding..

Looks are important, but in a different way. Okay, this will sound odd, but since so much of the armor in this game is ugly with no rhyme or reason as to what looks good or not (some pretty hideous fabled out there, yet seem some treasured with nice looks for instance), I actually "retconned" my RP a bit to make it so my character has no fashion sense at all. He thinks all this ugly armor looks GREAT. I actually used to ask to buy ugly armor as long as it was at least a sidestep to my current gear, or not too bad of a hit if a downgrade. In a way, set armor is the bane of his existance, the idea of matching armor that gets better as one gets more pieces is somehow "wrong"..to look good, one must clash..it's what the gods ((Developers)) deem is correct..look at our armor now, this must be true!

So yes, my RP now incorporates looking tacky intentionally. It's fun, and makes life easier. Having said that, if their was a good looking set that I could wear all the time, sure I'd go for that...even people with horrid fashion sense pick something nice on accident.
