I'm used to seeing the banners change from red to gold to blue, as one court or another gains temporary power. But I don't remember seeing all three banners flying. What does this mean?

Nothing. It just means that each of the courts has at least one tower.

Oh. I seem to remember that they are usually all one color. Am I just remembering wrong?

Every time the server comes back up every day, the banners are randomly changed, and then the players get to work. Many people change them all to one faction so they can get a named that spawns. They're usually angry if you change it, but screw them.

It's also possible to find purple banners if someone is working on the quest "The Courts of Maj'dul: of Fate and Destiny". These belong to the Court of Tears. It's hard to miss this happening as the city guards are replaced by wandering bands of orcs.

also there are more than three towers so others must be changed to.

Thanks all, for the enlightenment on this issue. I was not aware that the towers are taken over one at a time and so there could be any combination of banners flying. I do remember seeing the city being taken over by orcs a time or two, but wasn't aware that the orcs were related to the purple banners. The orcs have provided me with some pretty good excitement, especially the first time I ran into them -- since my character's level was quite a bit below theirs at the time and I was blithely tripping along, not expecting much aggro... ouch.

I used to do this alot with my monk befor KoS came out, it was really fun to run/FD to the top of the tower, FD behind the Tower Captain, and then when I was ready jump up, kill the captain then FD again and stab him.
