View Full Version : Roots: 5% chance to break if...

I went through 70 levels of warden without much use for roots. I much preferred melee combat, even in the days when level 50 was the cap and there were no AAs. What can I say...I'm an ogre. Then I started solo-healing Unrest, and roots suddenly became invaluable. For a couple weeks, I'd cast roots on things whether or not I needed to just to get my subjugation skill where it needed to be. I'm now capped at 350/350. Both my roots are at master 1 level. The description of the spells says they have a 5% chance to break on damage. That's about inline with what I've seen. The question is: sometimes they seem to break "just because" -- no damage being done to the rooted critter, it just unroots. First question: is that working as intended? Is there a chance per tick or something that roots break? Second question: if that isn't what's supposed to happen, is there any way to determine via log who/what broke the root? Thanks, long-time rooters!

I do believe there's supposed to be a resistability check every x amount of seconds (it should list it in the spell description.. says something like x% resistability and x% every tick). I could be misremembering though... been a long time since I really looked at my roots since I usually just go tank mobs.

Also, can you truly say that "NO" damage of any kind is being done? No one in your group has any kind of proc or any buff up that procs a damage? We sometimes forget the 'set it and forget it' passive stuff.

On the other hand, the mobs in Unrest are a couple levels higher that you in some cases, and Named in some other cases. They might have higher resistability and greater chance to break due to that?

Roots can break for no reason at all, happens alot when i farm and unfortunately its totally normal. I have never noticed a root lasting longer on lower mob vs. higher mob but obviously the higher the level the more chance the root can be resisted.

If you 'Examine' your root spell, you'll see the initial less resistability, then a resistability per tick of every so seconds (I think you may need AA for this value to be different? I don't know, I have AA in it).

A wizard here, not a warden, but we have roots too. Some hard to find culprits on breaking roots are: procs on items, auto-attack, DoTs, maybe spells that cast something unrelated on termination that triggers a proc one would not expect to trigger, AoE spells, etc. Remember, rooted mobs are not mezed so .... if the mob hits you and you have a reactive on you, that reactive can break the root too! -Leucippus

Oh yeah.... And that wonderful bard spell that has a chance of adding damage to all hostile spells. -Leucippus
