I dont know about any free software...but are you sure Windows Movie Maker won't save the files as a wmv...Try using the "Save to my computer" under the "Finish Movie" menu and not the "Save As" under the File menu (of course you must first save the file under the file menu but you probably know that lol). Using the options under "Finish Movie" allows you to save the movie in different ways I believe... Hope that helps!

I don't know about free, but Magix Movie Edit Pro is pretty good and not to horribly priced. That's the one I've been using lately and I think it works quite well

Unfortunately I think WMM is configured so you can only save as a .wmv . Atleast in version 2.0 I have seen that where the saving feature is streamlined. May have missed something though which allows you to save. You could try to go to the Windows site and fire an email off to see if there is an option.

Windows Movie Maker 2 doesn't have alot of good special effects but if you have Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop and some savy you can make some unique effects. Only bad thing is it is a bit tedious having to create atleast 60-70 frames then porting them into WMM2.

I think the essential word here was 'Free'... I have seen some really good stuff produced with WMM and im sure that there is a way around the issues youre having and some of the more technically minded people on here can help you with that.. Im not aware of any other free software thats easily available, but I could be wrong there.

Stick with it, looking forward to seeing your stuff!

You could give Avid FreeDV a try. Didn't try it, but it looks pretty decent to me.
