View Full Version : Is there any point to Vim for a caster with 700int?

I was solo healing a group (pal/troub/wiz/rang/bruiser/me) and in picking two people to give vim to, I inspected the characters. I noticed that the paladin had about 200int, troub was around 300, and the wizard had something like 684int. I gave Vim to pally and troub. (I was going to be healing more than nuking, and I know troubs have some decent nukes) But, on this forum, all of the raiders are always saying to give Vim to the casters in your group, and I know that those same casters *have* to be at max int... so, what's the point of giving them Vim? Just a power buff? Wouldn't it be better on someone that uses int for damage modifiers, but isn't capped (i.e. Shadowknight, Paladin, Troub, etc...)

Cap for int is over 1000, but there is s bell curve to the effectiveness. I think the sweet spot for stats, before the bell curve starts taking a serious hit is once you go over 700ish. But, you still see a pretty nice increase in damage when you are even in the 900+. I usually always put on mages in my group, and sometimes, when clearing trash or easy fights, I cancel certain group buffs and put vim on multiple people in my group. It is definately situational.

Reasons for vim for mages is equally benificial because of the power aspect not just the int. For example, a wizzy that uses manaburn... loves to have the extra power for that burn.

Also, rogues love vim also because of the int boost, which helps their poisons.

Anyway, vim is definately our nicest spell, and has uses even for folks that dont need int.

Yeah - you always gotta give to the Mage caster first and foremost IMO.

Otherwise you can mix it up situationally, but a class like Pally (controlling aggro) or Troub (crowd control, buffs...light weight dps), they're not wholly focused on the DPS aspect thus, won't be able to take as great advantage of your/our magic buff.

Don't troubies have some sort of group buff that procs damage on successful spell attacks or something? And if I'm not mistaken, the proc is based off of the trouby's int, so int for them would still be pretty useful. Of course, since you only had one caster, it probably wouldn't have been all that beneficial.

But to answer your question, if the caster has manaburn then I would definitely give to them first, even if their int is already high. Aside from that, I tend to hand out vim based on the people I'm with more so than the classes.

My hubby has a 70 troubadour and we actually did tests to see if Vim affected Dissonant Note and Precise Note. Sadly, Vim on the trouby had no effect on the procs. It's purely based off the individual's int who receives the buff.

From this thread, he wrote.....

---------

The troubadors INT was 472 the entire time, and that never changed. Inspecting the maintained buff for aria's on all 3 pc's showed exactly the same spell damage of 287-479 however the resulsts were varying. please see the following.

Fury - INT 599, (using a +25 spell damage from various items)

#procs - 351, crits 160 total damage - 168,294 average hit - 479.47 high hit - 679 low hit - 305

Trouby - INT 472 # procs - 246, crits 23 total damage - 99,251 average hit - 403.46 high hit - 657 low hit - 288

SK - int 194 (defensive) # procs - 212, crits 19 (/shudder) total damage - 71,966 average hit - 339.46 high hit - 525 low hit - 239

looking at the avg damage is not totally accurate due to the difference in crit damage, etc.. however looking at the low hit vs high hit out of the 3 classes, you can see they fall in relation directly to the int of the caster (fury has the highest int, and the "highest" low hit and high hit, trouby next, and SK last)

----------

On the note of who to give Vim to in the group, I stick with a pretty standard group on raids. Usually me, a warlock, conjurer, troub, necro, and either another mage or a scout. I always keep Vim on myself, take off Carnal Mask (poor squishies, 732 mit won't do anything for 'em if they get spanked), and put Vim on the Conjurer and Necro. Warlock tends to overaggro too much so it's a pain to keep it maintained on him.

edit: typos. yay me!

Have a fury in my grp for raids that keeps it on least 3 casters. Most the time. If theres a named that requires a certain grp buff he took off to get that extra vim it goes off the chanter or other non caster first. Even though at 700 plus the damage increase isn't much. Its something thats worth while for casual eof guilds at least. Plus the power is awesome too, especially for a MBing wizzie
