View Full Version : Best way to start using a Custom UI?

For the last couple of weeks, I've been using just the default UI from the game, adding bars when I need it, re-sizing chat windows, ect. But lately, I've been wanting to try out a few new UI's that look pretty neat, but I've had some nasty side effects. Going to places like EQ2Interface.com will show you some UI's and whatnot, look great and you install/put them in and when you load things up......they look horrible with no real possibility of "moving things around to make it passible".

Would my best bet be to try to restore the default UI back as close to what it was when I 1st installed EQ2 (looks-wise) and then try the new UI's? If so, is there a command to completely revert it back to EXACTLY what it was when I logged in for the 1st time? (i.e. Just 1 hotbar, default sized chatbox, icons placed exactly where they originally were....ect).

Also...I'm looking for some links to some UI's that are 100% "Idiot Proof" in setting them up (re: Installer to reduce the possiblity of user OOPs). If so, please link some examples of what's out there please. Am really getting tired of the default stuff,

For me the default stuff works perfect. One thing I do use though is eq2 map. It has the locations of mobs, quests, ect right on the map and works pretty good for me. That's really all I use but would recommend it.

I installed a complete ui too, and quickly hated it and took bits out i didn't like... and am left with just new xp bar and character/target windows. The default ui has been improved massively since launch and often follows what is available through mods - such as resizable icons etc.

To remove an custom ui completely, the best thing to do is to just delete the file which tells the client where to find the ui files (i think its called eq2.ini). This will revert everything back to the default.

Alternatively, you can delete the individual files from the custom ui folder that you don't like, and leave the bits that you do like. The directory should be in your main eq2 folder, something like /sony/everquest2/ui/custom - or whatever you called it when you installed the mod.

Hmmm, I've tried, I think, six different UIs that I got from EQ Interface. I'm currently using FetishNightfall. I like it and it has a few things that default doesn't have. All of the what EQI calls "full packages" are easy to install. One opens the zip file which has a folder in it. Move the folder to your UI folder; then there's always a file there as well, called "EQ2.ini" which needs to be in your main EQ folder. Be prudent here; back up the "EQ2.ini" file which is already there. Start EQMap (if you use it) and it will automagically figure out that you've installed the new interface. Now comes the hard part; the maker of the interface has almost certainly not got things where you might like them. You have to open up Options and unlock all of the windows, then move them where you want them. Some will not only be locked, they'll be "click through"ed also. You have to take that off with the individual, Right Click Windows, settings. After you've moved things where you want them set them to Locked and, in most cases, Click Through. Voila! You'll have a new interface when next you play. It sounds a whole lot more complicated than it really is. A little caveat here; some of the interface designers have stated in their readme that they have included a file which if, when you're in the game, you type "/load_uisettings" will set things up according to their tastes. I do NOT reccommend this! You'll find things all messed up and you WON'T like it. If I have any complaints about any of this, it is that EQMap DLs a new set of maps for each interface you install. I wish they would make a separate folder and put them all in it, once. Possibly it isn't feasible but it sure would be nice. Hope this helps; It really is easier than reading all this or even doing all of it.

I have always used ThorUI available as a package on eq2interface.com. Great work and many added features. The great thing about Faetyl's UI is that it has an auto-updater that will then run the awesome EQII Maps updater which will launch the game so you are always cutting edge with maps and changes to the UI.

One button to get me in-game is great since it loads a total of three apps.

I haven't used the ThorUI before but I really like FetishNightfall myself. Although you have to make a change yourself for the new LFG window since it hasn't been updated yet. That is really the biggest issue with using other UIs and mods. When SOE changes something you have to either go back to default or just wait out an update.

There are lots of minor add ons you can install that only alter bits of the UI (like changing the size of the effects/maintained windows or making the HO window smaller).

/load_ui Default would revert the ui to the default settings while you are in game. If you are out of game you can go to your eq2.ini file and change the cl_ui_skinname youruimodname to cl_ui_skinname default and saving.

I honestly can't stand the vast majority of full custom UI's. Too much junk and cluttered ew. I kind of like the default for the most part so only have EQ2maps and a click to cure thing added other than my own personal mods that correct what I felt was a serious problem with the hotbars and making other windows (effects/maintained/HO/tracking) smaller.
