I just installed everquest 2 on my new computer that is running windows vista 64bit. I log into the patcher and a message pops up that says "Update could not be initialized. The update server may be busy". I searched through the knowledge base, and tried everything I could find. Its running in compatibility mode and administrator privileges. Help.

To add some more information: I am not behind any sort of fire wall, and other games with the same patcher work, such as vanguard...
I just bought the game today as well. Installed it and when it starts to patch, it cancels out. Vanguard works fine, as well as the Play the Fae trial. I have no idea whats up, but its kinda annoying. Been trying to get it to work for like 3 hours now.

It sounds like its working, but I wanted to mention that I was having issues with the patcher initializing yesterday as well. It's worked a billion times before, but last night I just couldn't get it to go. I tried launching EQ on my home computer (Vista 32-bit) and my work computer (XP), and both would get stuck at initializing the patcher. I ended up waiting a little while and rebooting my computer (for fun and entertainment) and was able to load the game afterwards. This inidicates to me that my problem (and possibly yours) were related to issues with the server or network, and not your hardware.
Changing the permissions worked great! Thanks for the link. <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/283a16da79f3aa23fe1025c96295f04f.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" width="15" height="15" />
