I'm relatively new to the game. My question is do people actually form long term groups here and only play their character when their group is together. If so, I'm looking to start a new character and play in a group. I'de even be willing to tr playing on a PVP server.

Lots of people play solo and some only play withing certain circles. Most of the long term groups are in guilds or alliances between guilds. I'm a guild leader and got my toon to level 70 playing mostly solo and pick-up groups. I recently created my guild about 6 months ago and we enjoy grouping together all the time. However a lot of people (like me) like to solo and don't always group up. Then again there are people who only like to play in groups. It's not a difficlult thing to find people similar to your playstyle it's all what you make of it. I've recently been grouping alot more and attending pick-up raids to make more friends and get more out of the game. It's all in what you choose to do and whatever you decide you will have fun. Best of luck in your travels.

Starting out people tend to group with whoever is available.

Players that have been around for a while usually stick with either guild members or players that they have grouped with before.

Find a guild that suits your goals in game

I have three level-synched characters that were built as trios with two other players and we try to play those characters only when we are together. Level-synched just means we always stay the level since we do the same quests, kill the same mobs, etc. Our highest trio is level 60 now and we only play them about 3-4 hours (once) a week so you can still level up fairly quickly.

So, yes, to answer your question, you do group with the same people over and over again.

As a healer, having a great tank in your pocket, is key. There is this synnergy that happens when you find a tank that matches your healing patterns. You know what he or she is capable of and he or she in turn knows just how many to pull to keep the rhythm going.

It takes a bit of patience to find a tank for this, but once you do, it's a beautiful beautiful thing.

As for me, I do have a set group of people whom I group with on a regular basis. These people have been grouping with my husband and I since our early days of level 20 and we've all became really good friends. I don't have to worry about watching them too much. They know their role and know when to back off if need be.

The only way to find your set group, though, is by getting out there and just grouping with strangers.

Join a guild, make some friends and see what happens.

The biggest problem with a consistent, static group is that one or more people will always level up faster than the rest of the group. It almost always happens, and there is very little you can do to stop it other than coming to some sort of agreement at the beginning. I find a lot of new players are starting guilds together just for this purpose. Maybe you can try that.

If you want to try PVP server, there are a lot of people who lock xp and group together for PVP purposes from what I've read. They hunt together and really get to know each other well enough to work as effective PVP teams. While its not really advancing themselves along the leveling path, they seem to be really happy with the PVP action and enjoy the game on their terms. I don't know if I agree with their playstyle, but it's not my place to tell someone else how to enjoy the game either. If they are having fun, more power to them.

Good Luck and Have Fun. I think at some point you'll find a happy medium between soloing and grouping that will keep you interested. The game is friendly for both playstyles.
