Hi Guys

Ive really enjoyed reading the detailed feedback from Kendricke and others about optimising our AA points to help us templar's be as effecient as possible with our DPS when soloing.

So, I respeced to a mele build, set-up my DPS monitoring and off I went with some excitment. I'm am absolutely gutted/upset at the the DPS I was getting in my parses so I thought I'd come back to the forum for some further advice. I've listed below the main detials that I hope you can review and give feedback on.

DPS = 97. This was against blue mobs Lv35 (no arrow) wolves and spiders in steamfont mountains. 97, the shame, I've read DPS's of 200-500 in these forums.

Each fight is basically I have yaulp on, start swinging and use HO's with my smites.

I'm Lv 37, here's my main spec for you to review:

Strength = 74

Agility = 62

Stamina = 145

Intelligence = 88

Wisdom = 205

Health = 2998

Power =2015

Attack = 535

Migation = 1560

My AA points are spent

Deacons Stamina = 4

Hammer smite = 4

Severe judgement = 8

Protectors Agility = 4

Wonderous Buckling = 4

Battle fever = 5 (will go to

So the million dollar question is..what do i change and how to, increase from 97 DPS.?

Why are you upset by that DPS? What were you expecting to attain? What are you comparing to? If you are wondering why you aren't getting the dps scores you see others posting here you have to remember you're half their adventure level with only a third of their AA levels. I think you are forgetting this important fact in your comparisons and expectations. I could be wrong. /shrug When soloing quests, etc. I use imbued crafted STR and AGI rings for dps and haste procs, a good two hander (find one with a damage spread of more than 1:3 between min hit/max hit if you can at your level), STR dolls, STR potions, all manner of other STR gear that I have found, and a haste item.

Weapon is very important for templar dps. It's important that you're using a two handed weapon with a large damage range. To get examples of these, look at Blackscale Maul and Vrak'sakin Claw Club. The club says "Damage: 1-202" and the Maul is around 100-800. To find the ratio of max to min you simply divide the max damage by the minimum. The reason this is important, is because critical hits increase your damage by 30%, but with melee attacks at least you MUST deal atleast your minimum damage.So even if your damage is 1-800, you'll always hit for atleast 800 damage. I'm not sure of any low level weapons that work as well as these too, but you can check your broker for weapons with a high damage range, if you can find one it should help you significantly. Edit: Also, try to get pieces of armor with wisdom and strength on them, be willing to sacrifice a few points of wisdom for more points of strength. You can try looking for a higher level of praetorate to help with both.

Here's the issues I see right off...

Comparitively speaking, you have low STR and INT. You don't mention your spell quality (if you're in all Adept I's or lower, don't expect much joy there), and you don't mention the weapon you're using. You don't mention your level. A quick peek at your character's EQ2Players profile shows you are a level 38 Templar with an imbued Feyiron maul. In fact, most of your gear appears to be standard level handcrafted gear. I also see no adornments.

First things first, you've shifted your achievements toward a melee build. If this is what you want, build yourself around the concept. Make sure to use Reproach at the start of every fight. Make sure you're Yaulping at all times. If you're going to heal, try to do it before pulling, then stop heals during the fight. If you're fighting targets (especially non-heroic) that require you to heal during the fight, then you NEED to upgrade your gear.

Don't ignore spells. Just because you're concentrating on melee doesn't mean you sit back and wait for the experience to just come rolling in the moment you tap autoattack. If you can spend enough coin for just a few spells, make sure to boost your Reproach, Warring Faith (first damage spell you should cast in every fight- make sure it's always up when soloing), Pious Redoubt and Protective Faith (you'll upgrade this spell at level 40 anyway, though).

As far as timing goes, you'll find that you should be casting Smite about twice as often as your Strikes. For myself, this leads to a bit of a rhythm during combat that goes as follows:

autoattack

Spurn (Reproach for you)

Warring Axiom (Warring Faith for you)

smite

trigger (start a heroic opportunity)

strike

smite

pause (little lull here that I usually use to fire off a quick Hammer Smite or perhaps a quick heal if it's needed)

smite again

trigger

strike

smite

pause again (about this time, Warring Axiom needs a refresh - every other pause, really)

smite

trigger

strike

smite

etc..

You should get VERY used to the smite/trigger/strike/smite, pause, smite/trigger/strike/smite rhythm. Use the short pause between each group as a place to refresh your warring faith, toss a quick debuff, or add in some additional damage. Experiment with this order and you should see an immediate increase in DPS even if you improve no gear or spells (though I obviously recommend both).

Hi Guys

Again, thanks for taking the time to give your feedback, I read it carefully and use the information well. I've given you some additional information that may help you fine tune your feedback and also asked a few more questions that your feedback raised for me.

Level

I'm now lv 39, at 70% so soon to be lv 40. I realise a lot of your feedback required this information.

Weapon

I found the weapon feedback very valuable. I'm lv 39 so my gear is all lv 30, I have a lv 30 standard imbued feyiron maul with a 2.4 speed and a damage spread of 16-47 (+100 extra proc dmg). I can now see dividing the maximum by minimum damages I am getting a 1:3 ratio (I know now this is good) but my maximum damage is very poor. So I'll certainly be on the look out for a 2 handed mace with a much higher maximum damage but keeping the 1:3 ratio.

I looked on the broker and found the famous blackscale weapon I've read so much about, sadly I think it was lv 67, after I stopped laughing that it would be some time before I would capable of handlng this, it did make me think.

What weapons were you guys using at lv 39+? are there some nice mastercrafted or legendary weapons that I should invest in?. I searched the broker and to be honest most weapons were fairly standard, nothing I would say that would be an increase from the weapon I'm using now.

Spells

I'm a sage and through harvesting rares/purchasing on the broker I have made adept 3 spells for my nukes, dot and bebuffs so for all spells used when soloing I have adept 3's. So in this area I think I'm ok.

Armour/Stat Balance

Kendricke gave feedback about me having low Strength/Intelligence and generally about upgrading gear. This is one area I could do with some further detail on guys.

As I said all of my gear is standard lv 30 plate from the broker which has +Wis/+Sta/+Int (if I remember correctly). When it comes to rings/earings etc I've also gone for +Wisdom which has given me my 200 wisdom value with strength and intelligence around 70.

So it sounds like I need to change, so whats your basic strategy when choosing gear?, here's my questions:

1. Do you still choose the armour that gives the +wisdom (I thought you would get the most +wisdom this way) or have you chosen one of the other armour sets which has the +strength, +intelligence, + agility (if Ive got that right). Ive left the +strength armour choice as it looked more like a pally's set than templars - but maybe I chose wrongly. Excuse my lack of naming the correct names of the armour but I think you know what I mean, there are differing sets of armour with different stats on the broker - all standard stuff.

2. If the bulk of our Wisdom is from armour (assumption) are you then making sure that you pick only +strength/intelligence jewelry?. Is this how you are balancing your stats? as I said earlier I have also gone for + wisdom on jelwery to. I have also noticed that you can buy hexx dolls to, so these shouls be +str/int to help?

3. Whats your idea on a basic ratio of your main stats? what I mean is for a lv 39 templar my wis is 200, but str/int around 70. So there is a rough 3:1 ratio between these. So how should they be balanced? or maybe the 200 wisdom is still low and I need to seriously buy new jewelry to upgrade the other stats?

4. I've been trying to hold off purchasing any more gear until I get to lv 40 (I'm nearly there). My plan is to re purchase brand new armour+jewelry at lv 40 and then maybe mastercrafted chest/legs armour at lv 42. Any advice on what I should be buying?

Combat Sequence

kendricke thanks for sharing your typical sequence for a fight, it was good information.

The good news is that what I've been doing is very similar to your sequence, I think its the only thing so far in these forums when I've been close to other templars!.

All jokes aside, I did have a few more questions when I read your sequence that made me think.

1. I'm also casting reproach, warring faith on the mobs when they are distance to start the fight. I find the slightly longer casting time of warring faith gets interupted to much if I cast it standing toe-to-toe with mobs.

But what I was interested in was, I see you cast a smite, then start your HO, strike, then cast smite to contine the HO.

I have been triggering the HO immediatly after the reproach/warring faith with my stike hitting automatically between these spells when its ready. So why smite, then HO, smite/smite? why not go with the HO, smite/smite?. Is this 'extra' smite before starting the HO really adding to your DPS? I guess it must be. I will look forward to trying this, its just I'm so used to debuff, start HO that adding a smite before the HO is very interesting.

2. So with 97 DPS and adept 3 spells and a very similar fighting sequence, it can only be armour/jewelry that is letting me down?

You gave referance to a templar you are training who soloed in steamfont, he was also lv 39 and getting significant DPS, its this guy I'm comparing myself to and I can see I'm a million miles away from him right now.

Korgin

You're NOT going to get 200-500DPS at level FORTY!!! Heck, the real "turning point" is level 66 when you have access to the Blackscale Maul. There's some other earlier weapons that help too, but you're NOT going to hit the bigger numbers until you're MUCH higher. It is NOT a linear relationship between DPS and level, which means that a level 35 does NOT do half the DPS of a level 70 character. It may not exactly be exponential either, but that's the easiest way to think about it. Personally, I think 100ish DPS at your level isn't that bad at all. Not AWESOME, but c'mon, you're expecting WAY too much.
