I was told that a really good ranger can by far outdps a decent wizard. i been trying to decide between a wizard and ranger for raiding. which would be my best bet for getting picked?

Really, there's no "that's the one" answer for that question.
Aye, neither has alot of utility and are more just the raw dps classes. But in terms of dps, I'd agree a "really good" ranger would out-dps a "decent" wizard... but all that comparison is good for is if you're saying you would be a really good ranger but only a decent wizard if you chose one. *edit* By saying that it takes a really good ranger to beat a decent wizard in dps, that might offer a hint to your answer <img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />

All things being equal, with optimal group setup for each class. A Ranger could most likely outparse the Wizard. Although great Rangers are few and far between.

Rangers should always parse better than most classes in the game in most situations. I am not saying that it's right but that's just the way it is. If they don't then they aren't playing their class right and in all honesty, there are a lot of crappy rangers out there. I guess you can blame LotR. It isn't complex. Nothing in this game is. It all comes down to you either maximize your class abilities or you don't. Rangers aren't a button mashing class. Raid with one and mash buttons if you don't believe me. That being said and having raided with both there is a reason why my Sarnak will be a wizard. The wizard is always more fun to play whether I beat rangers on the parse or not. Blowing stuff up is always more fun than being a human stopwatch. Play the game and not the parser.

Rangers are capable of far more damage than Wizards in raids right now. Dot, period, end of story. That isn't to say that Wizards can't do a lot of dps, because we are far from hurting, especially when you get the right gear, but Rangers are down right sickening right now.

Now a wiz with the right group setup and tons of procing gear i whould hope would out parse the ranger.
Slippery is right. Top level raiding rangers are back to pre nurf levels of damage compared to other classes. In our guild we have two very good finger wagglers and two very good stick slingers. The slingers have dirges and the wagglers have a troub. The slingers are outparsing the wagglers by around 500 My dirge rez rate is at least double for the slingers they draw so much agro. That said both classes are very popular and mostly unneeded by raids. Classes such as enchanters, bards, shamans, rogues are much more in demand.

<p>All a ranger really need to top the parse is a sweet fabled bow, good arrows and good poison. CAs at master or Adept3 are a given as well as basic raid gear.</p><p>For a wizzy to top he need tons of proc gear and crit gear a troub and an illusionist plan and simple that is it. I have good gear and am always grouped with a troub and I can get close and beat the ranger every now and then, but more often then not I am behind the ranger. On the bright side I bring more to a group than the ranger does frigid gift in a mage group is godly upwads of 15k on signle targets and AoE fights upwards of 50k. Wizzy can also power feed, sure it hurts our dps but is vital for some fights like mayong ( not in 35K dps guild we are happy to kill mayong in 13 minutes, it gets faster each time we do it.)</p>

Rangers ... as things stand now. Even above all the DPS/util foo, Wiz go squish much more than Rangers when those big AEs go off. Yes, talking from experience and repair bills... I can only pray that wiz will eventually get some much needed luv'n.
