AE = Encounter only AoE = Out of encounter Most people refer to them as blue or green rather than these names but basically AoE are more dangerous to use in some cases as they can bring add's or break mezzes and such.

i would say AE and AoE mean the same thing. Area of Effect. The former simply omits the "o". All  spells that are coloured green and have AoE in the description will affect all the targets within the specified range and in that encounter only. The difference lies in the term PBAoE which stands for Point Blank Area of Effect. All spells that are coloured blue and have AoE in the description should really be termed PBAoEs as they will affect all the targets within the specified range regardless of the encounter engaged.

<p>Actually, theres no PBAOEs in EQ2 afaik.</p><p>Theres AE(Area Encounter) and AoE (Area of Effect)</p><p>AE = all the green ones as you guys previously stated. Affects the targeted gouped encounter. </p><p>AoE = blue ones - an AoE has a stationary point which is right under yourself and hits everything around you who is within a certain range.</p><p>PBAOEs had a point you could "Move" - a PBAOE was an AE that centered around your target, so if you targeted a mob the PBAOE would hit everything around that mob and you wouldnt have to stand too close to it.</p><p>Edit:</p><p>I think AE (Area encounter) spells are actually an evolution from the PBAOEs, now they are restricted to the grp but it still has a center of effect around the target you have in the of mobs.</p>

AoE = Area of effect (enemy is the target&nbsp<img src="/smilies/8a80c6485cd926be453217d59a84a888.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> Pbaoe = Point Blank Area of Effect (caster is the anchor anchor for the spell. The effect/damage radiates outward from the caster up to a given range, affecting all targets, or the first given number of targets the expanding 'ring' impacts GTaoe = With Ground Targeted Area of Effect (GTAoE) spells, the player places a circle on the ground that will be the area of the spell effect in eq2 we have AoE (the color is green) and pbaoe (blue) we dont have GTAOES =( , i miss them

<p>I always prefer to talk about </p><p>open/closed AEs or AoEs</p><p>AE/AoE = Area (of) Effect -> hits multible targets closed = hits only the targeted encounter open = hits everything in the given radius</p><p>i think thats much clearer then to define something like :</p><p>-> AE(Area Encounter) and AoE (Area of Effect) because it could also be AE(Area Effect) and AoE (Area of Encounter)</p>

There are definately PBAOEs.  Point Blank Area of effect simply means that the spell is close range and centers around the caster hitting any mob in range.  In EQ2 those are the ones with the blue ba ckground.  Wizards have two PBAOEs, including Fusion (which is directional PBAOE).  There are also targeted AE's.  These types are encounter based and only hit mobs in a single encounter.  Those are the ones with green backgrounds. AE and AOE are just an umbrella term for all types of Area of Effect spells.

heh... It took me like a year to figure out that the colors on the spells actually meant something... the game made much more sense after that...<img src="/smilies/385970365b8ed7503b4294502a458efa.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> also...I thought that AoE, ie blue spells have a limit to the number of mobs they hit?

Another thing to remember about "blue AoE" spells is that the spell emanates from the caster as a sphere so you can pull mobs from above and below you with it.

<p>Here's the orginal meaning / difference:</p><p>AE = adjective; area-effect; as in "the mob has an AE spell"</p><p>AoE = noun; area of effect; as in "the spell's AoE is 10 meters"</p>

Say, my coercer is fighting a mob of three, I pick up an add of two, and then try to mezz (green AE) the original group. Do the adds figure in as part of the group I'm mezzing, or do they maintain their original grouping?

The adds, unless they belong to same encounter and just were placed far away (like some lizards in feerrot) will not be affected. It kinda builds on the whole idea with encounters, 4 non-arrow up mobs that are linked are in essential the same as a three-arrow up mob except split into 4 entities, and green AE's are simply the means to affect the same encounter as you would with a single target spell if it was just one mob of same difficulty, with some twists on it in particular when it comes to how mez affetcs it. The only way you can mez both your current group and the adds at the same time is via blue background mezzes, like illusionist barrier of intellect.
