<p> Greetings, crafters!</p><p> Recently on my server, there has been an increase in " advertising " in level chat. People have been accused of spamming when tells are spread over several channels, and in intervals between levels. This, of course, ends in a whinefest that lasts much longer than the original message. My questions are:</p><p> 1. Is it spamming to spread your message to different levels at different times? Which leads to</p><p> 2. What is an acceptable, proven way for a new crafter to get their name out there for the masses?</p><p> Any opinions, negative or positive, are looked forward to.</p>

Ah, yes. the fine line between advertizing your services and spam. The trick is to find the happy medium where your server sees an acceptable level of chat. Every five to ten minutes is way too much. An hour might not be enough. Ways to get your name out there: <ul><li>Be sure to chat and pay attention to the appropriate channels, like Good_Crafting, Evil_Trading, and the level channel appropriate to you. When someone says "LF a tailor for T5 gear" be sure to answer in chat, so people associate your name with the service. The crafting channel is your best bet, as it's often the server's information service too. Chat and be active so people get to know you. Have a sense of humor <img src="/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" /> </li><li>Use the LFW tool.</li><li>Post an ad on your server board on this forum, and other sites which have server boards.</li><li>Free samples: if you're a class that does consumables, this works well. I used to make a bagful of totems and run to the level-appropirate zone and announce "/ooc Free [totem] & [totem] while supplies last! 1 each per customer please!"</li><li>Have a sale, especially if you're leveling: "Now crafting T5 Armorer Mastercrafted gear for FUEL COSTS ONLY with your rares!"</li></ul>I've found that reasonable prices are important, but friendliness and excellent customer service go an <i>awful</i> long way.

About the spamming thing generally what happens is someone does adverstise betwen the various levels chats is they do their little message between the 2 or 3 level ranges of their choice they wait only 30 seconds or less and do it again and again to the point that there are several lines of text where only that one persons ads are showing. If your looking a decent time table I would say 10 or 20 min between each advertisement group is considered good enough for most people. Also you may want to not advertise to all the level ranges you have access to if your in the higher tiers whichever one you are on currently and perhaps the tier that is right below you as well that way you don't have 5 or 6 messages going out at once .

I'm impressed that the "Tradeskill Goddess" was the first to respond! ( /genuflects to Calthine ) Responding in level chat is something I hadn't thought about. Draca, I'm glad you mentioned a time, as befallen is the server I'm referring to. I really appreciate the tips, as I'm sure a lot of new crafters do. We depend so much on the more knowledgeable members of our community. Keep any tips coming!
