I didn't see this addressed directly in the sticky FAQ, so I'm probably thinking too much into this, but.... Mages and Priest-types have to craft/buy their spell upgrades. I read that those are the only two classes that can get crafted spell upgades. Monk abilities seem to upgrade on their own every 10 levels or so... Are their levels of Monk abilities similar to Mages that you can upgrade through reading scrolls, etc., or is it all level-based for a monk? I am getting confused with mastery skills vs. mage/priest spell levels, especially since monks have a healing and an AoE spell early on. I don't want to miss out on any upgrades I can be looking for on my character. Sorry if this has been spelled out in some other post and I missed it, and thanks in advance for helping me understand

Monks get spell upgrades just like every other class. Adept III and App IV are made by achemists.

You will automatically get your new combat arts (spells) every level. They will appear in your hotbar(s) if there is room for the icon. Otherwise you can look in your knowledge book for the new combat art. It will be Apprentice I and you should look to upgrade it on your town's Combat Arts NPC where you can get the App 2 or much better even, check the market and get the Adept I versions off of other players who are selling combat arts in the open market. Upgrade combat arts ( those who replace the older version of the same ability ) are awarded every 14 levels and will have the same icon. So just replace the old icon with the new since they are on the same recast timer and there is no reason to be using an older, inferrior art. As has been stated, Adept III and Apprentice VI version of the combat arts are made by Alchemists. HOWEVER, once you hit Level 50 ..... no more free handouts. You have to buy your upgrade combat arts from level 50 - 70.

yarh what they said, just wanted to add that there is no difference between mages, priests, scouts and fighters. We all get app 1 spells every lvl (up to lvl 50) and can upgrade them. The only difference is which tradeskiller makes the upgrades. Early on upgrades are not that important but app 4 or higher is good. Later on you should at least get adept1 in all spells. EDIT: dunno how much you know already but the spell lvls are in order of increasing power: app1 (the one you get automatically) app2 (can be bought from merchants around the city) app3 (can be crafted from ordinary harvests) app4 (can be crafted from ordinary harvests) adept1 (drops from mobs in ordinary chests) adept 3 (can be crafted from rare harvests) master 1 (drops from mobs in rare chests) master 2 ( are awarded for free at lvl 14 +10*i, i=0,1,2,...,5)

Thanks for the clarification guys....just one more thing...

You get new versions of skills every 14 levels...so is it even worth upgrading at lower levels? If I get an AoE attack or a heal, or some other skill at level 6, and again at level 20, is my new level 20 version at apprentice 1 just as powerful as my level 6 version at Adept 1 or master 1? Is there some chart somewhere that maps out the base damage for the skills at different levels of proficiency?

Really good question. If this is your first toon, you likely will not be able to afford decent equipment and decent Combat Arts unless you periodically turn off XP to farm. I left XP on the whole way, and could only afford mediocre spells and mediocre gear. I didn't start getting good spells and good equipment until I got to the 60s. I will, however, tell you that equipment and spell quality make a huge difference. I'm just not the sort to stop and smell the roses.

Yeah, this is my first toon. I will probably turn off mob xp, since I am the type that likes to explore every nook and cranny. Maybe I will look to upgrade at early levels...Thanks again, all.

It helps if you want to know what to do at what level.
