I looked back through the threads and a good amount of people are experiencing the same type of issues while zoning / logging in etc. It is obvious this is affecting MANY people. It would be nice to see that someone is at least looking into it. I had this crash happen while leveling around a week or so ago. Now after the latest update it happens nearly everytime i zone and everytime i achieve an adventure level. The game crashes back to the character select screen and of course the character that crashed is stuck in the game world until the server decides to refresh.

Each zone get's dynamically assigned a unique set of TCP/UDP ports between the 1023 and 65536(?) port range, and get's a whole new set of dynamically assigned ports when ever the servers get bounced. This explains why you are able to get back on your character. as the new set of ports are not being firewalled.

Please check the firewall settings in the cable/dsl modem, router or software based program and see if this is the case.

ok... I had ports 1-9000 being passed through. I opened this totally up to see if it makes any difference. I cant really check it out from work so it will have to wait a couple of hours. Thanks for the post and I hope it corrects the issue. Does anyone have a narrower listing of ports that EQ2 uses?

The above fix did NOT work. This problem still exists. Reading some of the other threads it looks like something similar happened a while back and was fixed with a server patch. I believe the issue resides server side at this point.

With ALL ports opened i zoned into one zone and back out and back out and back in again with no problems... I did this 5 or 6 times. I then zoned to a different zone and back into the starting zone and then back to the second zone.. i was mistaken... it is still doing it regardless of bag open or closed. It is exactly as one poster stated. Loading UI Resources that seems to be hanging it.

This is not a port problem. With two accounts on one computer, one account will zone fine on all zones and the second account will crash every time. SoE had this fixed pre-LU34 and then when LU34 came out it rolled back whatever minor fix was done.

are the servers up or down? You go to the network status page and it says all servers are down yet no date is listed.

Ok, I have spoken to several people about this problem: SOE's reps are "stumped" and investigating further; my ISP has come out and shown us that our connection is strong and fast, and we've even tried running the game with Windows firewall off and with my IP address set as DMZ host, ensuring that it isn't a firewall issue; with all ports open, I'm still having the problem; I've updated my video and sound drivers, just in case, and there is no effect. This problem is making me crazy. As to whether it had been doing this before the last patch, I can't say because we only installed the game and started playing last week. We've pinged the server on SOE's end and are getting no packets lost. It seems like a connectivity issue, but I don't see how it is. However, if someone can explain what a firmware update is (I don't know anything about computers except what I've learned the past few days) I'd be willing to give that a try. Is this a download I can get from the manufacturer (Netgear in my case)?

Hmmm, thwarted again. According to NETGEAR, I must get that update from the vendor, but my cable company says they will only replace the whole modem if it isn't working. What the heck does that mean? I can't tell if said updates do not exist or if the cable company is just too lazy to bother with them. The modem is one of the newest models, they aren't going to replace it anytime soon. I'm completely at a loss for what to do next.

I have been having the same problem the past few nights. I'll be playing and suddenly that char LDs and I can no longer log him on just keeps crashing back to char select. So I log on a different char loads up fine; then I zone and they crash and I can't log them back in and so on.

Hi Bumb - I didn't realize that this hadn't always been an issue - that it happened after last patch. I'm still trying to find out more - I may know something by tonight. New backpacks in the bank for you so you can delete your owld "buggy ones" heh - though it probably won't help. It happens on one account but not the other account. It happens on wired and wireless connection but works on other account on wired or wireless connection. As I stated and others have as well, SoE had the issue fixed and it got rolled back with LU34. BTW, it is not useless information when you say that it is not his system but it is tied to his account.

You need to define the word "crashing" in more detail when contributing to a thread instead of being generic about it. What the OP is experiencing is "drop to character select screen" and not crashing. Your troubled account is "dropping to character select screen" and not crashing as in "crash to the desktop" or BSoD.

To further isolate these "select few" accounts who are experiencing this; have you tried playing the game with these troubled accounts on different computers at a different location?

If it drops you to character select screen at a different computer at another location, then you will have proof that the accounts are "bugged" and require a "coder" to investigate.

When dropping back to character select screen when zoning or achieving another level, then it's a connectivity issue or bugged character!

Good luck

Hm. i get tossed to character select when zoning, random while playing. When reviving in Raidzones etc. Dont have firewall or router. Doesnt matter what account il use, doesnt matter where i play. Same thing everywhere. Cant be a problem on the clients.. must be a server issue.

Well, I hate to make anything more complicated, but I and the boyfriend are playing two different accounts on two different computers at the same location and experiencing the same issue (drop to char select at zone about 65% of the time and on adventure level 100% of the time). It also occurs on any character from either account. Once I've been dropped, I can't get back in on any server with any character for at least an hour. Both my ISP and SOE have determined that it is most likely NOT a connectivity issue, at least not on my end. I know that that is frustrating to those who seem to recognize the symptoms, but I'd rather not continue to investigate a red herring. Considering that this issue seems to have occurred at the last patch, does that suggest that it is maybe a software issue?

I'm beyond trying to fix it at this point, I just want to know what it is! I may never know at this rate. *sigh*

If you don't see any .ini files then go choose Tools > Folder Options > View tab in Windows Explorer and change the setting off of hide system files.

I tried deleting those files, no progress. However, I did make a discovery. While playing EQ last night, when I logged in and every time I zoned my boyfriend got dropped from his game. Oddly enough he was playing CoD. [Removed for Content]?! So it's gotta be the modem/router, right? Even though our connection is super fast, and quite strong, it seems to just be a complete PoS and not want to work right for gaming. It's a NETGEAR CG814WG. Next step is buying a new modem and seeing if that does the trick.

And if so, did your BF play EQ while you played EQII from the same All Access Pass account at the same time?

If that is the case, then you cannot do that. The result will be one of the games will drop to character select screen or the desktop.
