View Full Version : Lag in Neriak - Can a dev take a look at some of this?

<p>I have 2GB of memory.</p><p>I run around in the game at a performance between extreme and very high quality. I only adjust things for raiding (I turn off shadows, turn particles to 1 per character, turn off cloaks, and tone down the number of numbers/names on screen).</p><p>Now, Neriak is the only place I have experienced extended framelag in a very long time, since getting my RAM upgraded. Mind you, I think I normally only experience the lag when things are rendering, but I'm not sure, the lag is always caused by something offscreen but close (no I don't have offscreen shadows on). Said lag usually lasts until I stop moving, and a few seconds thereafter.</p><p>I'm thinking devs may want to look over Neriak's design a bit and tone down whatever could be the source of lag, because while standing still for a few seconds fixes my lag problems, not everybody out there has 2gb of memory, and I'm sure they'll be suffering heavily while in this city.</p>

u know it's strange because ill be walking around and all of a sudden the game crashes, im not even lagging, and there is a runtime error(only in this zone)

I am going to make an assumption and say this lag is most likely being caused by some memory leaks in Neriak. Memory isbeing allocated for thinsg and not being deallocated properly (or fast enough). I also have 2GB of very fast RAM and noticed that the longer I stayed in and moved around Neriak the worse it became. I then began to watch the amount of memory usage being allcoated for EQ2. Over time it just steadily increased on average.

I think I can verify a memory leak, much more noticable with my measly 512mb ram. After wandering around neriak for a bit I will crash (this is with no zoning) with a critical error saying insufficient memory. This has happened about 5 times now. I'm guessing that the new zones haven't been optimized yet.

same here^, but i dont lag at all before it crashes

For speed, you might consider disabling your memory antivirus or antispyware scanner.  I know the one I use impacts frame rate, but YMMV.

ya i have 2 gig as well and at first i didn't have any problem but 1/2 way threw running threw the zone i started lagging as well.

I was having no lag at all in Neriak.. until the first time I used a teleporter.  Then I was lagging more and more I used them.

<p>Yeah, after about 10 mins, I lag too...2 GB memory, new vid card...still horrible lag after a while.</p><p>Possibly best to divide Neriak into 2 zones?  It was (3 zones ?) in EQ1, and we dealt with it ok.</p>

I can confirm this too. Around the Dockside Market in Neriak it takes me about 3 minutes maximum (tried about 10 times by now) to crash the game with a runtime error, complaining about not sufficient memory available. I have 2GB of RAM and never had this kind of problems with EQ2.

<p>Yeah. Really sounds like there are a few hotspots of lag/memory leaks that need to be fixed before this goes live. PARTICULARLY considering the mass influx of people to the city to check it out at first....</p><p> Devs, would you review this, please?</p>

As the leak hot spots will still be thier, this just may mask them... Better to fix the leak then split the zone.

I have 2.5 gig of RAM.  I don't even lag, i just go through the dockside markets, or near that blue flame thing where the skeletons are, and i get a runtime error and a request for more memory.  I DIDN'T lag mind you.  I wasnt even lagging. I take a screenshot and it does that too. Darklight has the same problems in certain areas.

There is a quest you need to do to be able to use the teleporters. Once you have access to them, you right click on them to select your destination, much like the carpets in DoF.

Having lag problems in both Darklight and Neriak on both my systems. Both have 2gb on them. When I first created my char in Darklight things were smooth but as soon as I moved down the road towards Neriak things started getting choppy. Played with the settings and got no relief. Was just as bad in Neriak, had to go from run to walk to retain any control. Hope it is pinpointed and fixed before live as I am excited and impressed with the look and am looking forward to moving my chars there! I know this is a tad off topic but I thing the devs may have missed a golden oportunity by not reintroducing the drogmor <sp> lizard mounts from eq1(live) into the game via Neriak!

I have the same out of memory error crash in Neriak Dockside Market, and that is the only place I have experienced it. Pentium Core 2 Duo 65502 GB RAMGeforce 7900 GTWindows XP Pro SP2

<p>no crashing for me </p><p>but if i play in very high quality or better the loading inside neriak is extreme, game freezes during that time</p><p>fatal , when running and near some deep hole !</p><p>if i switch to one step below very high quality (high quality?) its ok and i can run around fine (not smooth but ok).</p><p>i have 2gb ram, 7900 gtx card and core duo cpu</p><p>same counts for blackburrow !</p>

A Developer stated a long time ago that the reduction of the lag in Neriak is a slow but steady work in progress.

<p>I have 2 GB DDR2, virtual memory set to zero, and performance settings at extreme quality.  I have the same "out of memory" error after a short time in that zone.  Enabling virtual memory solves that error but not the lower frame rate.  I hate turning down my graphic settings just for this zone, since most of the other zones I visit give me smooth frame rates at this setting.</p>

Neriak used to lag me out insanely, but it really isnt worse then QH or Kelethin now for me. As long as I dont enter either of those zones with two clients I usually dont have too much problem, but just the thought or running both into neriak when I dual box on same computer gives me nightmares.

Neriak is lag city, it always lagged for me, I was very disappointed. They released this awesome city for dark elves and we can't even visit it without crashing. I get heavy lag there or go LD. It's the city itself, it's bugged and give the memory error. They have done the graphics cheaply and didn't take the time to optimize them. The whole thing is worthless and a bad update. Since the release of Neriak I am waiting for the lag to get fixed so my character can move there and get a house. I still live in Freeport since Neriak is lag city, it's useless to hang there. Please fix that, why release a city if we cannot visit it without lagging like hell?

Same problem, lag from heck..insanley so. Always been the same no matter what I do to my options. And yes they did say that they are aware and were thinking of ways to fix it but an update here or there would be nice to see where it stands because honestly, it taking years to get from the bank to the docks is just ridiculous. I also have plenty of ram and new vid card.

One of the problems is not yall it is in the game.  The blue flames use alot of your mem and i have 2 gig so i am laging bad.  Also i have dail up and no dail up cant make you lag because there are only 3 places i have ever laged in.  But twhen runing around Neriak turn of your torachs and look down more often and you will move alot faster than ever and the lags will die off.  The system made that zone with very high graphics so they will used up alot of your mem just looking at anything almost.

I still have lag issues in neriak/darklight.I just don't get it, my system handles the entire game on balanced and higher settings, but even knocking everything to minimum for neriak, i can barely move from the zone in point. If i right click the teleporter, i can literally cook a meal before the menu shows up.Crafting, i can lose the entire 4th bar, in one update, as it tries to catch up. :/I don't want to live in freeport, the houses are ugly and i can't get a 5 bedroom house without status. <img src="/smilies/9d71f0541cff0a302a0309c5079e8dee.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY" />

<p>I just returned to EQII and I also have problems in Neriak.  I mean it is a slide show.  No matter how much I cut back on everything it takes me about 5 minutes to go any distance at all. </p><p>I realize this is an old thread but has anyone got a solution ??  Have any of the devs said anything ??</p>

<p>This worked wonders for me, thought i'd pass it on (see the italic text in fist paragraph).</p><p> Not my idea, as you can see, posted by Roybob on one of the Stickies in this Forum about, "Application Running Out of Memory" or something.</p><hr />GENERAL COMMENTS:Out-of-memory crashes occur on a newly built computer, assembled several days prior to LU35. As such I have no way to judge when this problem might have began.  My old computer - Athlon T-bird 1.3ghz CPU, 1gig ram, GeForce ti 4400 128mb graphics, WinXP SP2 - ran the game dependably since launch at Extreme Performance without crashes of any sort. Note that so long as I avoid Neriak I do not experience out-of-memory crashes at Very High Quality on the new 'puter <i>so long as I reduce Character LOD Texture Resolution to medium and do not enable Environmental Shadows</i>.Note also that I now run the game in a window while trying to diagnose another game-stopping issue. I have had no out-of-memory error crashes while in windowed mode using settings that work with full-screen mode. I have not attempted Neriak since switching to windowed mode.Message edited by Roybob on 06/02/2007 15:40:55. <hr /><p>My Neriak Issues vanished upon reducing Character LOD Texture Resolution to medium and disabling Environmental Shadows.</p><p>I'd hesitantly suggest that, possibly, there is a conflict between the LOD Texture Res in-game, and from something such as Nvidia Control Pannel, which also has some LOD options.</p><p>That's VERY MUCH speculation on my part, but i thought i'd mention it as the thought did occur. <img src="/eq2/images/smilies/3b63d1616c5dfcf29f8a7a031aaa7cad.gif" border="0" alt="SMILEY<img src=" width="15" height="15" /></p>

Thank you for the advice.  I always run with no shadows enabled.  I will check about the Character Lod.
