View Full Version : Gold Spam - Feedback / Venting

Spam happens, sure. It's hard to stop, sure. I get it. Normally if I get one or two spams a day I consider it on the same levels as commercials on TV. Sure there are a lot more commercials but then the spam isn't supposed to be happening at all so it's just a nuisance and I deal with it and move on. In the last few days though I've been getting multiple spam to the same character from the same souces throughout the day. It's gotten to the point where I'm getting spam just over 10 minutes apart at times. If I didn't want to buy it the firs time spamming me more only makes me even less inclined to buy their gold and character leveling "services"... (idiots). It's nice that Sony provides a means to report spammers but really it's entirely unrealistic. My system is ok but it's not the top end system it could be. Pulling up extra windows outside of EQ particularly in the middle of something like a group or a raid is entirely inconvenient. It should be as simple as /report <spammer> and it should automatically log the information rather than making us, the victims, jump through hoops to report someone. Even then I've jumped through hoops only to have the exact same person spam me again later so obviously reporting isn't doing much anyhow. We all know perfectly well the gold spammers will just make a new character with some new random name and spam us again later. Maybe it'd be nice if certain keywords (ie the spam web sites) were not only filtered out by the game but any entire text using them. They could try variations on the name like www dot name dot com or add spaces in it but all of that can be added to. Sure, it's an inconvenience but at no point have I or anyone I've talked to needed to chat about the web sites in question and I imagine that holds true for the vast majority of people. Make the spammers not only have to get new accounts to spam us but make them have to keep changing their web sites and URL. If people can never find the site and they look like their own competition it can't be a real sales booster. Ok, so maybe there's a concern about filtering legitimate chat because messages containing inappropriate content are filtered at the server level. Fine. Please at least give us, the players, a means to filter out more than just words. Give us a chance to make the choice and let us choose keywords that filter out the entire message rather than just replacing the word itself with junk characters. If I insert spammer website X in my uberspam filter then the entire message of any message containing that word is stripped and I never even see it. Sure we can filter out the name but because the names keep changing that doesn't work and I accumulate several names a day that way already and need to constantly prune my block list because of it. That doesn't fix the mail issue but most of the spam I get is really unsolicited tells. Im getting fed up with paying to play a game where I'm receiving so much spam and nothing really seems to be done about it. Am I likely to quit playing? Unfortunately not quite yet but it's really starting to get my ire up so at some point that answer will change. I happen to really like playing EQ2 and would much rather see this problem addressed then have to make the ultimate vote of choice by leaving to indicate just how dissatisfied I am. Am I making too much of this? Yes, probably. It is only a small bit of text in the otherwise large amount of text I go through each day. I'm just sick of dealing with it messing up replies and the fact that I'm paying to play a game not read commercials. Wouldn't it be nice if we at least received a discount on our monthly bills for each "commercial" we had to endure? If that were the case I bet Sony would be a lot more motivated to stop the spam. As it is, what real reason is there for Sony to put much effort into it? It annoys us, some of us a whole lot, and it's frustrating but until it actually drives us away they lose nothing while we have to deal with it. Small disclaimer... yes, I'm just another joe-idiot player. I don't know anything. I'm sure I've messed up some "facts" here but as indicated in my Subject line this is as much Venting as anything else. I don't care if I'm right or not here, I'm just fed up with the spam. As the paying customer I have a right to be disatisfied with the service. Yes there are a heap of similar threads and I'm adding to the spam on the boards. Without providing feedback by some avenue though the powers that be won't know that we're being annoyed so while this may to some extent be spam it is also constructive in that one more player is indicating their level of disatisfaction.

you get spam, Sony get money for their accounts, you think they will stop it? i doubt it lol, it would be VERY nice to have it stopped as 2 messages in 3minutes is not nice but reporting or ignoring the messages relaly does nothing ive found as every 5mins their is a new lv 1 alt on a newb isle spamming you .... it would be nice if they stoppe people from Newb isle talking to you unless they are in your friends list, that way the spammers would at least have to WORK to annoy us hehe

This poor, poor dead horse! Have you tried using /anon? Since I put my characters on /anon, the SPAM has reduced to almost nothing. I still get tells and emails occasionally, but not even remotely as much as I did prior to using /anon. Yes, it's a problem. And, yes, SOE is working on it. We just don't see it - they don't publicize who gets banned, so frequently people think that nothing is happening. My personal experience, though, on Najena, at least, is that I see fewer bot groups, and much less spam than I used to. Might just be that the spam varies from server to server, too.

Anon does nothing to reduce the spam.

There should be a very short command for "report the last tell I received as a spam" (how about /spam?), and a button on mail to report the last read mail message as a spam.

With those in place, I'd report a lot more spammers than I do now (now=0, cause it is a pain).

I've sent /feedback requesting a /reportspam command to automatically file a /report and a /petition in one quick, easy shot. It would be easy to coalesce these reports of the same toon serverside into a single damning dossier with minimal interaction from the honest players who are victim to spam. I hope some kind dev will listen.
