View Full Version : EQ2 rebooting PC after 45 minutes of play

Good Morning!

For the last few days my computer has been rebooting itself after about 45 minutes of playing EQ2. It does not matter what character I am playing, nor does it matter what zone/server I am on. It took me a day to even see what the pattern was to the reboots, as I was getting very frustrated.

I opened up a bug report in-game yesterday afternoon, but thus far no one has gotten back in-touch with me. Is that not the right way to report problems for EQ2? If not, what is?

Either way, there have been no hardware changes on my system for several months, and there has been no software changes for at least a month. I was logged into another graphics-intensive MMO for 10 plus hours on Sunday with no problems whatsoever. Additonally my computer has never rebooted itself outside of EQ2. I am also getting no error messages before these reboots.

I'm currently at work, but from reading some of the other threads here, looks like some sort of error log should be generated when EQ2 crashes. I will look for it when I get home tonight and try to post it. I can also grab my DX info, and hijackthis log and whatever else you might require.

Thanx in advance, Jim

The dxinfo will be nice, you should also post the blue screen STOP error. You are definately getting one with the automatic restart. In order to get an idea of what that blue screen is saying, you'll want to disable the automatic restart. 1. Right click on "My Computer" and click on properties. 2. Click on the Advanced tab. 3. Under the Startup and Recovery heading, click the Settings button. 4. Uncheck the checkbox labeled "Automatically restart" under the heading "System Failure." 5. Click OK and OK to close out the windows. Next time you get a blue screen, please write down the entire error message, including the 0x000000 numbers and post it here.

I didn't find any error logs anywhere in the EQ2 directory, but I may have just overlooked it. I'll be playing EQ2 now to see the famed BSOD message. . . Expect another reply in about an hour. . .

------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 5/1/2007,
The blue screen advised me to remove any new hardware I put in, and remove any new software I installed. IE typical tech support stuff.

Technical Info Stop: 0x0000007F (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

From microsoft.com This error message can occur if either of the following conditions exists: •Your computer has hardware or software problems (hardware failure is the most common cause). •You try to over clock the speed of your computer's processor (for example, you set a 150 MhZ processor to run at 187 MhZ). The above STOP error means a trap occurred in kernel mode and the trap is either one the kernel is not allowed to have or is always fatal. The most common causes of a STOP 0x7F are •Low-level hardware corruption, such as corrupt memory (RAM) •Mismatched memory modules •A malfunctioning motherboard Using the above as criteria, and seeing you have a 9550, it is possible that your card is either overheating or some of the video memory has gone bad. It also mentions "mismatched memory modules". I see you have 768 megs of ram, which indicates that you probably have a 512 and a 256 in there, or three 256mb chips of ram. If you have two DIMM slots you might want to go with two 512s, or try running the game for a little while with two 256mb chips to see if it stops the blue screen. You can use a memory tester here: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp It will require you to boot from a disk/CD to run the diagnostic, which you should allow to run for several hours. This will tell you if your RAM is okay or not. You should also test your ATI's memory, http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/. Have it scan for artifacts for about 30 minutes. If it finds any artifacts, your memory on the card is probably bad. Regardless of all this, the 9550 was designed as a bottom-of-the-line ATI card just to compete with the Geforce FX series pricing (another low end series).

in my experiance your computer is overheating and rebooting to protect itself.

check the fans in your case. The reason it happens playin eq2 is that it puts your processor under a lot of load...thus causing the overheating.

hope it works

They should have the date in their file name. Find the 2 most recent ones and copy those to your desktop for now. Then PM me and I'll give you an email address you can send them to. I'll have a look and see what I can find. If you don't have any mini dump files; Right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select "Advanced" Goto "Startup and Recovery", select "Settings" Under "System failure" Configure as such (if not already); tick "Write an event to the system log" tick "Send administrative alert" tick "Automatically restart" Under "Write debugging information" Select "Kernel memory dump" Leave Dump file: section alone. CLEAR "Overwrite any existing file".

Also, perform the following:

Disabling memory caching in the BIOS. Make sure you have APM disabled in the power management section of your BIOS. Try enabling the APIC table in the BIOS (if it isn't already).

Also, as poster above me stated; check to see if the fan on the video card is running, though when ever a heating problem occurs, artifacting on the screen would occur or the system would shut down.

Whoops...amost forgot! Anti-Virus programs cause 0x0000007f errors. Has to do with the lack of available kernel space.

I can report that the video card does not have a fan on it, however based on the evidence (with ideas from the people here), it does indeed look like my system is overheating. I confirmed it by running my system with the cover off and I had no reboots at all for several hours. I'm a bit mystified why only EQ2 is affected, mind you, since I also play another graphics-heavy MMO with no problems.

Anyway, this weekend I'll be working some more on the problem. . .

Thanx for the help!

Jim

It also makes the processor work its [I cannot control my vocabulary] off. Mine hits a max of 40 degrees celcius when playing anything other than EQ2 (BF2, BF2142, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.). Even when the rooms ambient temp is at 74f, it doesn't crack that threshold. Fire up EQ2 with the graphics cards cranking, RAM getting hot enough to scald, and the processor temp hits 45-47c.

There are inexpensive after-market heatsinks & fans for graphics cards, and if there's room for expanding the number of fans in the case, a couple of 80mm fans would help. What type of case is it, and what size CPU fan are you running? If it's a stock cooler, there are better, easy to install, and cheap, options available to you.

edit: also, try running Motherboard Monitor http://www.download.com/Motherboard...4-10518385.html

It'll show your temps, and that's easy enough to check by minimizing the game and seeing it drop as it cools down.

It's possible it doesn't rely as much on the hardware itself.

Everything in it is stock, save for the video card (needed for the games we play), the memory (which I needed to upgrade to access the bases in CoX), hard drive (must have more space), and the cd-burner (freebie). I suppose the only stock things left are the motherboard, CPU, power supply, & floppy now. . .

TSR-GarethC wrote:

I'm curious to know which one.
