Now I'e dabbled a bit in writing back before this seemed to be quiet as active of a board. But a question. When you make a story how many charactrs are actually from the game? (ie. do you use peoples toons you know in game) If so, do you get permission and how do you build their character.. er I hard to say I suppose.. Do you base it on the way the person plays in game or mm Idk how else to put it hehe ^_^

Well the anwser is not really a yes or no one. Most of the main characters in my stories are based off of other players in the game. For example in the shattering Teaeran, suggi, Nnayven, laere are all based of characters that I played where Mast (Masterious) was my toon and yet also my brother's.

Now using Mast for example (Taking for granted that you're familier with the shattering trilogy to date): Mast had a drinking problem, was dependable under any circumstances, tended to add a little more thought into his actions then Tea ever did and all in all was a person that you wanted around you. So the character name is one that I sugested to him when he made the character. But his actually personality had a mixture of myself and my bro. We have a way of just complimenting one another liek Tea and Mast in the story. Hence the wives and guys in the unit starting calling us brothers and it's really been history after that.

For a character that was solely mine for the entirety of my EQ playing career: Teaeran. Tea quite simply has no inhabitions. You know that little voice in the back of your head that says "You know, maybe that's not a good idea." Well Tea is a compiliation of teenaged - early 20s me without that little voice to tell him to stop. Then he also has a lot of post deployment me all wrapped into him as well. The nightmares, inability to sleep liek a normal person, iritability, crankiness and down right cruel at times. I mean there is so much that goes into Tea that it's hard to even explain fully. He's a walking contradiction which i think really makes him come across as a more real character. Oh yeah and Tea only sees only in black and white, right and wrong vision. There is no gray area. somethign is either good or bad no inbetween.

On the opposite side of the spectrum. Yeena: Yeena is a character based of a friend of mine in eq2. The real name of the toon is Yeenya but i typoed it early one and saved the typo into my spelling directory on word. So from now on she'll always been Yeena instead of being spelled correctly. She's a mixture as well. Kind of marrying in what I, as a guy, see to be the ideal woman and Yeena's player. She's young, naive and unexperianced and yet under the same token she is only willing to put up with so much. At my current place in teh story she's just now starting to blossum into the vibrant brilliant character that she truely is, but without the journey getting the character to that point was kind of pointless. As much as it pains me to say it as well there is a fair amount of Shado & Yams mixed in there. Just something about those girls that well eh I don't know how to explain it. When you're old/cranky like me you'll understand the odd sensation that you get from seeing young people.

Last of my Character's that I'll cover is Rose. Rose (rosepetals) is quite litterally my friend rose. There is no mixing, no pulling bits and peices from here and there, Rose is Rose. Rose and I flirt and carryon to the point that everyone thought we were newly weds or something the fight like siblings and go right back to flirting again. She's a great woman who rally gave me the drive to get though those tough scenes before i had any sort of a fan base to support me. I swear had I know Rose liek i know her 7-8 years ago I might have moved up to the frozen north instead of settling down with my wife.

Well I hope that gives you a little something to work with. I can mention that in closing some of my other characters liek "Mysidia" is Mysidia from her tale, we jsut thought it would be fun to do a cross refrence storyline. Then there is aloska who I just created for the purposes of the story. Nothing in the character came directly from another player.

*shrug* I guess int eh end you you need to screat character that stand out from the rest of the mob no matter where you get the inspiration.

*Thumbs Valk in the ribs* She's even got NPCs who play large roles in her story.

The only last requirement is that if you're going to write an epic that you need to move over to the Befallen server. As on now Avalonspirit, Ekuthh, Valk and myself are on that server making up at least half of the regualr post makers. Oh yeah and mysidia who's now retired was on Befallen with us.

Lol,I like it here on LDL. I've wrote and dabbled for a long time. Just always wondered if it was appropriate to base a chara on someone without their knowledge. Or if you ask for permission. I've always asked and then mixed that persons personality with how someone should be with the times/place. Unless they had a preferred kinda personality for them, then its a mix between that and what I need to make em work properly. Hehe. I've been scanning some of the stories but it'll take me a bit to read over it all. You guys are pretty good.

Well for pretty much all of my toons I asked permission first. Aloska would be the exception, the orrigional name for the toon was Satexma, a name taken from an RL friend who played eq. But when i forwarded over the chapters so that the scene with satexma in them; well it was decided that the actions were not the actions that satexma would do. So i changed the character name to one just off the top of my head (random gen off of SWG) so that i could keep the character with al of the actions for what i needed for the story.

Does that make a lettle more sense? I'd ask first and if they so no (which has only suto happened once) jsut change the name.

Well, I dunno if you've read my story or no, but Elhonna (main character in my story) is my main toon in eq2. Ereviz was my friend for a year before I lost him to the evilness that is WoW. We leveled from level 22-50 together. Duoing, grouping, raiding, we did everything together. It's scary when someone you meet in a game finishes your thoughts for you when you are in a group. I write Ere's dialog like I've always seen him play his character. He didn't roleplay his toon, but he had a gritty, no-nonsense way of playing I've carried over in the story. I've always partially roleplayed my characters, and El's a bonafide rude, half-evil, yet compassionate person in game. From killing a whole dungeon off so low levels could get quest items at the end to killing everything in a place someone was grouping at because they were rude to me or annoyed me, I've always ran the whole spectrum with that toon. I've always loved the environments in EQ2, that's the main thing that comes out in my story telling. The combat scenes are almost pure DnD. I never really asked permission, though he knew from the beginning that he'd be in any story I wrote about EQ2. He posted a chapter on a WoW forum involving me to surprise me and I was impressed. (the other characters in my story are all made up...I think lol) P.S. I'm a blackburrower, plan on staying that way. I've always found that other people with talent either inspire me or get on my nerves if I'm around em too long and then I'm unable to write. So people like me tend to be loners in our writing.

Right on. I don't believe in useinf someones name/toon without permission, but have an old friend who left a long time ago, that can't get in touch with, who was vital to my story lines. Changing the name is much better than starting all over and changing my chras history. ^_^ I suppose I'd have made it easier to answer if I'd givven example and broken the two questions apart hehe.

well the PKers go to the PVP servers, the roleplayers go to antonia Bayle sever, so doesn't it make sense that the writters all relocate to the Befallen server?

As to someone being sucked away to play wow. (I still mourn Mysidia) Screw it use the name. *Deletes the big long explaniation of Neospawn's role in book I of the shattering*

Unless the person comes and it upset by the use of the name (which i doubt would happen) then who cares. But eh I'm the grumpy ranger for a reason after all

hehehe you'll have to ask Shado about the time she ran into me while i mentoring down to help some friends. At first she didn't believe it was me. SO yeah if you wanna be COOL then you gotta move over the befallen. Espically since the free Character transfers started today.

<Edit note: Jsut don't be suprised when you hear peeps refering to me as a Q@#$!@#%!@#$%!head-hole. I've gotta keep my rep intact whether it is here or in game.

Ekuthh
04-25-2007, 01:44 PM

Rep? You have a rep?

Well, now I'm gonna have to be more careful who I tick off in game... it might be one of you all.

In answer to the OP question, with a few spotty exceptions the characters in my novels (okay, so I'm well past the point were I can claim I just write stories) are solely of my own creation. I do not like to make extensive use of NPCs or other people's characters because it allows me more freedom. From Kinslayers Tale and Return, only Ambrosious, Ekuth and Pippy (newly introduced) are actual in game characters. The more memorable ones- Darius, Naomai, Melanilana, ect... are purely products of my demented imagination. They seem to introduce themselves into my narrative with personalities already intact.

Given all of that, I seem to be the oddball of the group here in terms of writing style. When I write, I'll often have little more than a vauge idea of the scene or perhaps a single sentence to open the chapter with. The rest is just written as it comes out... everything you read here from me is what you could call a "first draft"- I write and post, without preplanning much (save for checking for spelling and grammatical mistakes).

Regardless, welcome aboard and get to posting!

well not as off as you'd think. I personnally spend a lot of time planning and outlinning what i want to happen, but it never actually happens that way. I start with a basic premis of what i want to happen and then it jsut runs off on a wild tanget after that. I mean crap for chapter VI nothing to do with what was orrigionally planned to happen. But then again my whole series of based of the 6 minutes video that shows when you create a new character. (the book turning thingy)

My introductory 1 - 2 chapters ended up being all of book I, and my first 2 chapters of book II have been 6. I'm jsut really starting to wonder if I'm going to be able to do a trillogy like i want.

My main characters are all me for the most part (kinda have a multiple-personality issue, but I'm a gamer so no one else notices), Zazha, 'Zoffie, 'Daisy, Aunt Rolyes (EQ1).

Uncle Doleleen and Sildder were my EQ1 hubby & bro-in-law who I have long, long since lost touch with but since Sildder's player had a thing for DE necro girls (married 2 or 3 in game) with the slight class modification, they got glumped together, given then slightly Tier'Dal sounding name of one of my old D&D pallys and Ja'Dee was created.

I still have contact with only one of my future characters who will based on a real person, and let him know I would be using him as a starting place for a character (also linked him the story so far).

As for the rest of the characters, most are NPC's I've abducted. You can look around Beggar's Courts and find Reana working a booth, Aquilia will be standing watch, one of the young thugs will be getting into trouble in the lower Court and, of course, 'Queen Antonia' is there. Bloodsplatter still visits his Mama in Big Bend, Titus (with an extra I in his name) patrols WFP (And it really does disturb me when I walk past & he doesn't even recognize me. RL Guts was transfered to SFP/BB Gate, but the Baron is still scaring recuits and passing out writs on the Militia House 3rd floor.

Urielus and Durbin Tenbeers are imagination (or some combo of my RL ex-BFs) becuase they were plot driving characters and I needed to be able to control them. RL McManus is also pure fiction becuase I couldn't find a pally Halasian around the city.

Well most of the characters I've made of my years were outt amy head and I suppose you could say part of me. But I like to play with others personalities too. But see my prediciment starts from the fact that the first few stories to contain her (which I like a lot mind you) were infact written by said person who is part of my charas past. I like for those who have had a great impact on the chara to be in mention somehow. So, since that said toon belonged to the person who started me on EQ2 I do believe I'll keep em. He's a nie guy he'll understand if nothing more =D

It's nice to hear where some of you guys charas came from. it was you who started that idea Tea when you first discussed how cruel she was =P and her fetish for sugar =P and yes, i was mentioned -twice- and it took me this long to appear , shocking, even to myself I write a little fanfic, never post it, but i write it, and i always ask permission before using a toons name, that way if you need to find out or get help on the characters personality you won't be bombarded with questions before getting a straight answer and yes, he needs people whining at him before he actually writes, he told me so himself. our pleas make his muse happy i guess

See that is also where the horror of a mispent youth comes into play. I was that boy that you didn't want within three mile of your daughter which maked me believe that I was curse by someone's mother to eventually have all daughters. Don't get my wrong, she's my world and has me wraped right around her little finger, but there is so much less to worry about with little boys.

I mean broken bones, scraps, lacerations I can deal with all of that stuff. Dads seem to have more problems with that sort of thing. She had her first date a few months ago and it didn't bother me all that much but I heard he almost had a stroke.

Well when i was 17/18 my sister was jsut reaching that age when she wanted to date (14) and well, as a senior and decided that I didn't liek the idea of a freshman dating my 8th grader siter. (Nor any of the 8th graders either)

But in the sake of wrapping this up quickly. I was an [Removed for Content], sister was made, I had to do comunity service for disorderly conduct in a public building. BUT, she never dated again until I was gone of to the army.

Dating should wait until you're finished with college. Finish all of your schooling, get a job then spent time with the one or two boys that daddy has preapproved (threatened to cut of their manhood).

Yeah but there is a flaw in the logic. See young Niko was the perfect boy after prescreening to spent time with your daughter. Active in the church youth group, Boyscouts, on the football & ski team (went to a ritzy yet public high school and no spring sport since i had to work on gramps farm, he let me play football tho), tought pitching to little leagers, I even volenteered to help with a group of cubscouts.

BUT that was jsut my public persona. Because of all of that I was never punish for being cought underaged drinking, fighting (always for a good reason), minor trafic violations (like 20 over, helps when teh sheriff's son in your QB), That and well tied into that is the whole Why Niko shouldn't be around your daughter (without getting itno to many details). And well also Niko's Dark side, but yeah those records are sealed and so are my lips.

lol... Raise your girls right and give them some credit and they wont be weak spined push overs besides most boys arn't as smooooth as they think they are.

Preach it Lunnagirl.

Actually back in the day when my hubby still had pet snakes, we talked about what MTFL would say to the future 'BF's. He told me he was going to take the young man in to see the snakes and explain "I have to keep them, that way if anything happens to my daughter, and my wife has to kill you, I'll have someplace to put the body." Hubby knows he is bigger, but I am the dangerous one (since he'll clean up anything I can't finish).

Well I've run a couple of thoughts through my mind. one of them being to spoil my daughter SOOO badly that no man will ever put up with her crap. But they again my wife was spoiled and i still married her. so that one is out.

another idea (that is in motion) is enrolling her in martial arts at age 2 so by the time she get to that point hopefully she'll bully the boys, and no one will want to date a girl who can beat them up. I've dated a girl who could kick my butt. Doesn't last.

My wife has this crazy idea about making sure that she has lots of self esteme and is able to not put her self in situations. I'm a little ware of that one tho. I much more like the idea of my little pumpkin kicking a guy in the junk cause he tried to talk to her.

My ex-husband is a cop in our town too, which helps a bit lol

But most importantly my daughter is alot like me. She doesn't take anything off of anyone and if someone tries to mess with her she doesn't put up with it.

Cersiana: Wow, I don't think I've ran into another LDL author as of yet. I do hope you decide to start posting (or maybe you already have, I haven't been visiting the boards as regularly as before...getting killed at work).

Although the original question has long since been derailed, I will also throw in my own meager two cents here. All of my characters are based either on my main, a few on my alts, and a lot on friends I knew in the game. I changed their names in the story, but retained some part of the name as to preserve their "memory" so to speak.

Have a good day all.

hmm my characters.... a few are my own, a few belong to others who gave me prior approval, and all the rest i made up. course making things up is easy when your not worried about truly following game rules/lore hehe.

I make it up. I use NPCs in game if the role is one that makes sense for them to fill. I don't use other people's characters. I just sort of worry about making them sound the way the person playing them would want them to sound to do it. The only exception to this is my husband's characters and then I can ask him before I finish if it is right.

There are a few made up characters in my story, but I try to keep that at a minimum. Mainly because I'm not really all that great with coming up with names on a whim. This is why "Drin-Sha's" name is merely a Rydian phrase and not an actual name. Truth be told, I haven't come up with a decent one for him, yet.
