Hello all, I became a necromancer at 53 from conjuror. As a conjuror my scout pet was fairly worthless, both at adept 3 the mage pet always parsed higher, even on single targets. So after confirming it with some other conjys I ended up just mastering the mage pet always. I bought the mage pet for necro in master now and it has been going well, but I see so many people talking about nightshade like it is so wonderful. Is nightshade an exception to the rule? Or are necromancer scout pets better than conj scout pets? Or will I be fine just using the heretic in master?

Thanks

If you're in a group, use the nightshade. Mobs die too quick for the mage pet to really get going and most group setups are more melee ideal anyways. The nightshade also has more survivability. However in a raid environment the mage pet is always better, regardless of what some misinformed might tell you

The nightshade was once godly in dps, both in auto attack damage and in CA's, it has now been scaled back but is still a decent pet. Depending on how you are spec'd the nightshade can still do excellent damage but the warlock pet has been showing much higher numbers on parses and with every mob in the game being able to AE the warlock has more survivability.

I think it is also simply the rarity of the spell, and IMHO it is one of the best looking pets either conj or necro can get at any tier.

i think the best looking pet is the dreadnaught master, followed by the night shade havent seent he heretic master yet. i think conjurors got the poop end of the stick as far as pet looks.theirs are all ugly

The same rules apply as a conjuror. Here is an old post I made in the newb forums. The only thing I dont know is if necroid pets do poison or disease damage. The spells you have to buff your pets are mainly the difference between the two. Ignore the last comment for a mage pet in offensive mode.

Tank pet - High hitpoints, low dps. Crushing damage.

Scout pet - Medium hitpoints, medium dps. Cold based piercing and slashing damage.

Mage pet - Low hitpoints, high dps. Heat based AE (group encounter only) nukes.

_________________________________________________ _______________________________________

DEFENSIVE DPS

Tank pet in defensive mode - Best overall way to pull a hard encounter. The defensive mode gives the pet hate gain. It has increased hitpoints and will last the longest of all your pets but the dps is mainly coming from you. Perfect for named encounters that would normally squash you. Plane shift this pet for best results.

Tank pet in offensive mode - You get a high amount of hitpoints on the pet and the dps is a little better than in defensive mode. The hate gain is also reduced a bit. Keep EV and BA on this pet as much as possible to avoid getting agro. Also assume you might get agro so start with dots and work your way up. Much the same way as a paladin or SK tank that cant retain agro like a guardian or zerker can.

Scout pet in defensive mode - This is a great combination for easier group encounters that generally fall fairly fast. Perfect for doing writs on Isle of Guardian for example. Green con, non heroic mobs that are in groups of 4-5. Good combination of hate gain and dps. The defensive scout has a fair amount of hitpoints but much less than the tank pet.

__________________________________________________ _______________________________________

OFFENSIVE DPS

Scout pet in offensive mode - When dps is important but you need a little time to cast your spells without getting agro, this is a great combo. The pet retains less hate but dishes out a fairly good amount of dps. Perfect for soloing easy mobs and Probably the most common soloing combination.

Mage pet in defensive mode - Not a very good setup and the one I use least often. In defensive mode it generates more hate. But the problem is the mage pet is squishy and dies fast. Most often the mage pet only comes out in a group or raid. So why would you want to pull hate off the main tank? This might be ideal if you need the dps and there is some kind of AE dot. This may allow you enough time to constantly heal your pet and retain some of it's dps. Keep in mind the mage pet is AE encounter and not just single mob. So you don't want to pull mobs off the main tank with you and the mage pet constantly casting AE damage. Dont recommend this until you've mastered your class.

Mage pet in offensive mode - All out dps. This is the most common group and raid scenario. The mage pet unleashes a barrage of AE group encounter nukes. Most of the time if you send this pet in with Elemental Vestment and Blazing Avatar it will die. Wait till the tank has had plenty of time to generate hate. This is the squishiest pet we have and if it gains hate your gonna have a bad day. If you really have a death wish you could plane shift this pet, ember seed it, elemental vestment and blazing avater (but ofcaorse you have to be in one of those suicide kinda moods).

It has a cooler looking scythe or whatever it is, but thats about it. And yeh I miss the days of the totally overpowered Nightshade /cry

It's not just the scythe that's different, if you check out the Ad3 Heretic it's just an empty cloak with a simple scythe.. whereas the master has a skeletal face and hands showing, looks much better imo - comes second for me after the Nightshade M1.

As for the original subject of the post, as has been said, deciding which pet to use is situational - but when you level up and start raiding I think you'll come to love your mage pet, most necro's do. Not just because of the DPS, /pet ranged owns.
