The PVP Guide for the Beginner (NOOB) I have been playing EQ2 for over 2 years now and in the last six months I have switched to the pvp server VOX. I have learned that this is a whole new way to play the game. After losing seven platinum pieces, because I forgot to bank, and dying over and over and over and over...I decided to buckle down and figure this thing out.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT FOR SOME AND NOT THE ONLY WAY TO PLAY JUST A THOUGHT. PLAYING A TOON IN THE HIGHER LVL'S AND RAIDING IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT GAME.

Here is what I've learned...

First and foremost, create a character you enjoy playing but understand what it requires as far as pvp. All classes can do well in pvp if they are played correctly and played smart.

My experiences have taught me to either be a scout or group with one because if you're not hunting you're being hunted!

The "hunting" I am referring to is that WONDERFUL little power called "track". Track is THE #1 most important aspect of being an EFFECTIVE pvper. As long as you have someone with track in you group, u will always almost always have the upper hand since the scout will see the enemy from a mile away. Scouts can also see an invisible or stealthed player (depending on which scout) which also gives you ANOTHER irreplaceable advantage.

The WORST feeling on a pvp server is when you are harvesting or fighting a group of NPCs, and out of nowhere you are dead and have no idea why. Usually, its because another scout was invisible or stealthed and snuck up to you & ganked you.

I have a Fury fully equip for pvp and I don't enjoy him much because I am primarily a solo player and I feel that I always need to watch my back. Granted, the fury will kill most encounters and sometimes even three or four at once; I just don't enjoy the hunted feeling. I would rather be hunting. For this reason the scout has become my favorite class. I can stealth and track and run fast, all the essentials for good pvp.

Next find a good Guild!! A good guild will help you a lot!! Higher level guildies will be willing to craft whatever you need if you give them the rare ingredient needed. There are also MANY other ways a good high level guild can help you, but that's a story for another time.

Ok you have selected your class, and you're ready to start your adventure into the new PVP world.

Ok do not play your new character!! That's right take a step back. If you have a higher lvl character or a friend in the game (probably a guild member) take an hour or so to prep your future toon!! What I mean is get yourself 6 good sized bags to carry the loads of items you will come across and some boxes for your bank and then get all the rares needed to craft your lvl 12 Mastercrafted armor and jewelry. Next have a good Scholar friend make all your spells adept III up to lvl 17. THIS IS A MUST if you want to be successful in pvp!! As an option, you can have an armorer make you a set of lvl 2 Mastercrafted armor and start the game with good armor and adept III spells and watch how well you do!! Just to let you know up front, this will cost you a small fortune.

You sure you still want to play on a pvp server??

Ok you're ready to play your new toon!!!

For starters lvl 1-10 you're pvp free, you cannot be attacked, so enjoy it and learn your class basics. Quest and kill your way to level 10 as quickly as you can.

Note: if you happen to get any quest lvl 10 or higher do not complete them until you reach lvl 10, and if you come across any "Named" Monsters DO NOT kill them, I will explain later.

Ok so you have reached lvl 10 and now you can be hunted and you are very vulnerable because the pvp level range is 4 levels and the lvl 14 characters with their lvl 12 Mastercrafted armor on and upgraded spells and new achievement abilities can mow over you like a Toro on crack. Ok now disable your combat xp!!!

I know your thinking, "WHAT?! Are you NUTS?! You just said I was a big bull's eye and could be mowed over, why would I lock my combat xp??"

Ok here is an essential ingredient of pvp!! YOU MUST QUEST AND KILL NAMED CREATURES!!! That's right. I had never been much of a quester before learning this important tidbit. I just enjoyed killing and killing some more.

But if you want to be great in pvp, then you must begin to quest, and not just a few quests. You need to do all of them Yes ALL of them. (Ok not all, leave the repeatable ones alone.)

Why do I need to do ALL the quests?? Simple my friend: AA or Achievement experience.

With the new Achievement abilities introduced in KOS and EOF you can really improve your toon significantly, and the only way to get this coveted AA is to complete non-repeatable quests lvl 10 or higher, kill names, and explore new areas. This is where having a scout excells because you can stealth past all the aggro to get to the mobs needed for the quests and while you're at it you can TRACK em' down!!!

VERY IMPORTANT!!! If you have acquired a lot of coin at this point, be SURE to put it in the bank before going into a PvP area!!!!

If you leave the comfort and protection of your well guarded city and are killed by the enemy they will get to take over half your money you have on you as well as a randomly picked treasured item. DON'T FORGET TO BANK.

Now you will, at some point, completely forget about this rule. You'll be SOOO excited to try out your new gear or one of your friends will plead for help and you will run right out into the world, forget to bank, and lose a lot of money. Trust me. It will happen. Your heart will just sink into your stomach. Laugh it off and move on! There's not much else you can do. (Except remember your killer's name for future hunting reference.) When you complete a quest LVL 10 or higher, kill a Named Monster for the first time or discover a new area for the first time you get experience towards your lvl as well as your achievement (AA). This must become your main route for leveling up your character. So get to it and quest like a mad man (or woman) and get to lvl 12 as fast as you can and without getting killed in the mean time!! Greater Faedark is a great place to do this as there are not many there to kill you. (If you're a "good" toon, that is.) Ok you've hit lvl 12 and now you're ready to put on those Mastercrafted pieces you made in the beginning. It is important to do this (make all the stuff in advance) because when you're on a roll with a new toon, and it will take you a day to craft all your new gear and you don't need a day break to mess up your rhythm!! By now I'm sure your thirsting for blood.... Head out to the zone of the opposing faction and start to hunt!! If you're a scout then you're all set for solo hunting and if you're not, find yourself a good scout and become best of friends!!! At this point I suggest pvp and quest your way to lvl 17 and at lvl 17 stop questing for a bit. Remember that you do not get any xp for killing, just questing, so at lvl 17 you can kill all the pvp toons you like without the worry of gaining xp.

Why stop at lvl 17??? Good question, I stop there because in the beginning zones the pvp level is 4 levels thus guarding you from the lvl 22 toons with there fresh new Mastercrafted gear and BIG powerful spells and Combat Arts.

Once you have attained about 750 kills with your toon (I know its a lot, and I will explain why in a minute) it's time to move up to 27.

At this point you have probably attained a lot of treasured items. You have two choices, if you took up the art of transmuting then transmute away, but if you need to make some good loot then list them on the market for 3 - 5 gold each and watch them sell like hotcakes.

Take some time to choose a God and do your first round or quests. Having God powers can be a big help in some tough fights. You can start these quests at lvl 17. Take a day and prep yourself for lvl 22, getting all the rares needed for the Mastercrafted armor, jewelry and adept III spells up to 27 (which will cost you an even bigger fortune).

Once your ready, quest like mad again to lvl 22 and equip your new gear!!

When am I "ready" u ask? This is why I told you to get about 750 kills or so. Here is where it gets fun. By this time you have gained a lot of faction with your pvp merchants. Take a look at the gear offered by your class merchant and you will notice that you can buy fabled gear with coin and faction. The only way to get this faction is to pvp. With 750 kills under your belt your should be pretty close to having enough faction to buy this gear (which players refer to as "the PvP gear), so quest on and kill kill kill!!

NOTE: You can check your faction by hitting "p", then clicking the "faction" tab.

How do I get a title?? Good question.

Well first you must pvp and you must be smart about it. Try to hunt those toons with the same title as you or higher, since all kills count for faction, but only some count for fame. When you kill a pvp toon you will notice in your chat box that you gained fame (or if you're killed you lose fame). This is the key ingredient to gaining a title.

Now you're in the enemy's land so be smart, learn your terrain, and keep moving. Yes, keep moving. If you stay in one spot the enemy will rat you out and call for back up at which point, I don't care how good you are you will die!!! Know where your safe spots are, know where you can zone and know when it's time to throw in the towel and run. Running doesn't make you any less a man or woman it's just makes you a smart player when a title is important to you. The key thing here is not just to kill but to rob the other player of your death as well.

Ok, so you're in a group...who should be the leader??? The SCOUT always the scout!!! He is the one who can see the enemy; it makes perfect sense if he says follow then follow and if he says fall back then just fall back. Don't be a hero!! I know if I am in a group and I say to fall back and you go running up for the kill, you're on your own... hope ya make it, I'll be off to a safe spot where I can control the fight!! The scout can see if there are 20 other invisible toons there waiting for you to make this mistake.

You must play smart on a pvp server, all in all this makes you a better player all the way around, you will notice you fight mobs differently and come out victorious more often.

If you want to ensure your success then make friends with your comrades, make them things, give them money, and help them finish quests... This is a key ingredient of having fun because they WILL return the favor!!

But BEWARE of the random tell in an enemy's zone by a toon that says come to me there are a lot of easy kills here... TRAP! They work for the enemy and are luring you into death. Ask them what guild they belong to and what title they have?? What? No guild... no title... crappy gear hmm smells like a bad idea to me /dropgroup!!!

All this, or, if you're on Vox...you have many many legal options:

Buy a level 70 toon.

Buy platinum.

Buy your spells w/real life money.

Buy your gear w/real life money.

I do not endorse low level pvp - never have. Don't believe me - look at the last time I played with any lower level toonz. I just take my time and have fun with it.

Don't worry about titles, don't worry about your kill streak, don't worry about your death streak. Just have fun in PvP. The cool thing about early pvp - you will eventually level beyond the T2/3 gank squadz and then beat them silly (hypothetically speaking). Unless you suck - like me - at level 59, I still can't beat a level 20 to save me bloomin' life!

Yes, how dare someone not be a powergamer and twink? Only level locking twinkers are playing the game right. NOT.

PVP gives many things to many people. Not all of them want what you want from it, but that doesnt make them less than you. Many people want a PVP sever because it is a server that has the additional attraction of PVP. Not everyone thinks it is a PVP arena that just happens to use an EQ2 server as a setting.

I rolled a toon here for the rough and tumble of pvp, live or die. Title and kills streak are synonymous with cliff diving, running, zoning, perma-immunity, hacking, warping, cheap [Removed for Content] play (though not necessarily all at once, just in general).

I should say its perfectly possible to have a character with no lock, levelling constantly but maintaining masters on all major spells, mastercraft/leg/fabled armour constantly being refreshed with levels and being extremely competitive at the ongoing level ranges as you pass through. Its just way way harder work than T2 twinking etc, and not everyone has the stomach for this more challenging stuff as opposed to grinding based play, which is how I find the lock style to be, not totally difficult but more like repetitive. I think some people mistake willingness to grind with difficulty. I do both but not everyone is up for that.

Shaun

Thx for your guide! This is something which new players need (Me being one of them) Please, share your knowledge on the subject of bringing toon's stats to max. lvl - how it's done? One guy in game told me I have to have around 1500 hp by lvl 15 to be competitive in pvp. Your help appreciated.

Ahh you bring up another good point.

If you look under your persona (hit "P&quot then look at the skill tab you will notice your skill level max and your current lvl. This can only be raised by proforming said skill.

I will give you an example...

When I first started pvp I rolled a ranger and locked him at lvl 10, then I was advised to by all the shard collection quests so I could gain lvl and aa quickly.

So I purchased 4 plat worth of collections and turned them in dinging me to lvl 16. WOOT I thought!!

Put on all my mastercrafted gear and adpt III spells and off I went. Well as I fought I thought man I suck nothing is hitting and this ranger really sucks... Then it dawned on me, I looked at my skill and I was only half of my cap and that was the reason. So I did what any good pvp'er should do and deleted him and started over. ARRRRRG I was mad for three days.

DONT TURN IN COLLECTION QUEST!!

I have a 13 ranger with over 12 AA now and my skills are all maxed.

Point being made is if you lock your lvl it give you the opportunity to max all af your skills making you more effective in that tier as well.

I guess with all the flamers out there I need to say this is just my opinion we all know there are alot out there so take this advise as you will.

~ Lazz

Thx for sharing your thoughts, Lazz.

We are talking about maxing combat skills, like piercing or slashing as well as combat magic, right?

What I'm wondering about is this - let's say, I've locked at lvl.11 - have done the quests for aa which are white or blue in that zone, next stage of these quests in that zone is lvl 14-15, orange for me. Do I unlock and reach corresponding lvl. 14-15 to do them and lock again? Or just stay locked and move to different zone to find the aa quests of lvl 11 , at which I'm locked right now?

Heya! I think this is an excellent guide for the beginner twink and even for those or aren`t wanting to twink because of whatever reason they have, it is still an insightful guide to the inner workings of character development on the PvP server. People should [Removed for Content] off to another thread if twinking and tweaking their toon to maximum potential for their lvl is too much to handle. If you suck and get ganked all the time at low levels I feel sorry for you. Personally, before I twinked, I never really died as much as people are saying they do, of course that was 8 months back before I left.

Now things are different, and I believe to have a par level with your enemy at the T2,3,4 ranges, you need to at least meet them in gear requirements. Wouldn`t you agree? I mean a full suit of master crafted gear is a bare minimum. Now for spells, I would recommend master I`s because sometimes the adept III`s just won`t cut it I`m afraid. Especially if you are trying to root a character, slow him down, stifle him etc. You need to break through their barriers, which will be higher than you expect.

From my experience as a hunter, not the hunted, I can offer something constructive and positive to this thread for the newer aspiring PvP or PKer.

Hunting Techniques 101 by Shizukani:

Dawn Patrol:

Ok you probably thinking, what on earth is this guy talking about.........I like to air raid n00bs and the unexpected for many reasons but I will list the few that can justify it best.

1. The eggs are found in the Gryffon fields fyi, but I won`t go into details as this thread isn`t about quests you can easily search for that.

Once you have your gryffon access what do you do? Just jump onto and fly man..... No. You are a ninja, or should be hehe, and ninja can fly. Walk up to the dude at the top of the tower double click him so the menu for where you want to go comes up. Don`t select anything yet, hit your stealth button (I am an assassin, so this is from my perspective, other classess can invis at this point also), then hit your tracking button and make sure it is switched to PC Only. Ok now select your desitination. You are now flying invisible with your tracking up, this is where you keep tabs on the action below.

in your chat bar I suggest having /who ........... ready

If you fly over and find a PC you want to know if it is a Q right, type /who Brenog (I love ganking him on Naggy) and it will say This player doesn`t exist = Q = go kill it OR Brenog (Anon) = Freep. Or vice versa if you are a Q etc.

Once you have your target hit jump. If you are not buffed which you should already be when in hunting mode, I suggest you do so before the flight. If not jump a little ways off the scent, as to not lose it, then buff and close in fast because if they are any good they know you are coming.

If you have a small group, use Ventrillo or Team Speak to co-ordinate when to descend on the prey, timing is essential and studying your prey`s pattern of movement is also a fun and valuable way to PvP with high success.

That is just one of the many techniques you can use to hunt, more to come when I get time.
