What role do rangers play in groups? How useful are they? Are they in high, or low demand? What trade skills should I pursue as a ranger?

Rangers fill the dps role in groups (see the FAQ thread at the top of this forum for a bit more info). They are damage dealers first and foremost, and specialise in ranged attacks (bows and arrows). DPS classes always seem to be in reasonable demand for groups, though I haven't played a ranger myself so I don't know if there's much difference compared to any other dps class.

Tradeskill-wise if you want to make stuff that will be useful to your adventuring, you will need to keep your tradeskill level equal or higher to your adventure level. If you're willing to invest the time to do this, then the tradeskills most directly useful to you would be jeweller (make your own spell upgrades and jewelry), alchemist (make your own potions and poisons), provisioner (make your own food and drink), armorer (make your own chainmail), and woodworker (make your own bows and arrows), listed approximately from fastest to slowest in the speed of levelling up. If you're not interested in keeping your tradeskill level equal to your adventure level then carpenter and tailor could be useful at any level for making boxes/furniture and bags, otherwise it doesn't really matter what you choose, pick something interesting to you.

Thanks for the reply. As far as carpentry and tailoring goes, is there a lot of money to be made off of the sale of bags and furniture?

That will depend on your particular server's economy, really. On my server boxes seem to sell fairly steadily as everybody needs them, but only for a modest mark-up. If you sell large volumes of them you'll eventually get rich, but you're not going to sell just one or two bags and make platinums. Furniture sales seem to be very patchy - one week people will buy a ton of furniture, then nobody will touch any for three weeks after. It depends on how many people happen to be decorating their houses at any one time, and whether you can guess what they'll want to buy. If you want to make a full career of carpentry and decorating you can go out into the channels and advertise your business, set a fixed price for decorating a 1-room or providing a table and chair set or whatever, if you establish yourself as a crafter of a particular type and go out actively marketing then you'll get more business (this is true for any type of crafter, not just carpenters). I understand from my tailor friends that bags tend to sell similarly to boxes.

For all types of crafting there isn't a huge profit to be made from common crafted items, you will be able to make more of a profit from crafting rare harvests, whether you harvest the rare yourself and then craft it up, or whether you buy the rare when it's cheap and then mark up the crafted item. Carpentry is the least predictable in this since the items are desirable simply based on what they look like, so you may manage to sell cheap common items that are very pretty for more money, but on the other hand, there are really really ugly rare items that will never sell if you're unwise enough to make them. I wouldn't say ANY tradeskill is going to make you money hand over fist - selling raw harvests and collectible ? items will probably earn you more money faster and for less work - but if you want to be a crafter and you put in the time and effort to figure out what people want to buy and advertise your services to them, you will be able to make a profit.
