Just started the game and I have to say I'm pretty excited to get up and playing.

Played EQ since Kunark

Moved onto WoW beginning of last year and it's gotten so boring.

Now with all the good stuff I'm starting to hear about EQ2 I'm coming over.

The biggest question I have is: When starting a new character I heard that you picked like an archtype then once you get to a certain level you pick a class. Has this changed? I mean I had the class option from the character creation screen.

There are so many choices in this game it's a little overwhelming so I need a small amount of advice. I like choosing characters that arent the standard but can do well if skillfully played. I know that makes little sense but what I mean is In EQ I loved being a beastlord and a Berserker. Got both to 70 when that was the high level and LOVED tanking. I did that with beastlord until it just wasnt possible anymore. Then I switched to Berserker and tanked with him since it was more possible then the beastlord once OoW came out. I LOVE tanking by the way but I hate being forced into being gimped when not grouped. However, that being said I duo with my wife 90% of the time so when i say grouped I mean full group um....grouped.

In WoW I play a Druid currently and if you know about wow it pretty much sucked being a druid for pvp.

So I guess the question is knowing this any class suggestions? I was looking between...Monk, Bruiser, Swashbuckler, Berserker and Shadowknight. Havent given otherse much thought but will if they are suggested. Oh and I am a pretty hardcore player and raider. When I quit EQ my Berserker was in top guild with max aa's so I'd definitely want a character that wont be frowned upon should I choose to join a raiding guild later in life.

Sorry for the exceptionally long post. Hope I hear from you thanks!

Oh and also anyone suggest a server with decent players that tend to be on a U.S. EST time zone?

Thanks again!

You might have a hint-book that's quite old You pick your character class right from the get-go, you no longer have to choose sub-classes.

eyec8s wrote:

There are so many choices in this game it's a little overwhelming so I need a small amount of advice. You're one of the, if not the, most powerful pvp classes. PvP rules, though, whatever class you choose.

eyec8s wrote:

Sorry for the exceptionally long post. I enjoy my time on Vox PVP, which is also an Exchange server. Others i'm sure like their servers as well I'm EST also.

If you love tanking straight up, then Berzerker or Guardian are for you. 'Zerkers are more offensive and Guards are more defensive. If you want to try a non-standard melee class, then try Bruiser. I'd recommend a Troll for the high STR for the Zek/Guard and I love my Ogre Bruiser.

Butcherblock is a nice server to play on.

Actually had another question now that I saw your guy's signatures.

Are tradeskills like Old EQ where you could master every one of them or are you limited? I saw you guys had characters/names/and single tradeskills in your sigs.

Oh and by the way thanks for the info so far it's helping me decide a little better.

You get one primary tradeskill and then a choice of either transmuting or tinkering as your secondary. You can only choose a secondary if you have the EoF expansion.

If you're looking for a straigh up tank Guardian and Zerker are the way to go. Pally and SK are also good tanks, obviously pallys get some heals and amends which gives someone in the groups hate to you (a percentage) so I'd probly say a pally holds agro the best. However, if you're just duoing agro really isnt an issue, and once you get into raids theres other classes that can boost hate aswell so again, its kind of a non factor. SKs get the lifetaps as usual and are a bit more on the offensive side of the fence from pallys. They also make fine tanks. Then you have the brawlers (Monks and Bruisers). These are the most dps oriented tank classes. There taunts can be lacking which they make up for in damage to hold agro. Monks are more of your fast (haste) based fighters, Bruce Lee or some such. Bruisers are more your hit like a freight train guys, think ultimate fighter or something. Monks hit faster, bruisers hit harder. Both are avoidance tanks which means you dodge a lot of your attacks, but when you do get you get hit hard since they only wear leather. Both get FD, monks also get group FD. The nice thing about your brawlers are they have more utility. You can tank if needed, or switch to DPS. FD to prevent a wipe. If you're planning on playing with the wife a good duo is Brawler Shaman (sound like EQ1 at all?=) ) Shamen use wards as there main heals. A ward is basically a rune from EQ1. You put it on the target and the target never recieves the damage because the ward just eats it. With avoidance tanking you'll dodge a bunch, then get hit but the ward will eat it (up to a certain amount of damage). Druids have HoTs, so you'll dodge, get hit and the HoT has to tick up to get you back to full health. Clerics have reactive heals, that is where you get hit and the heal reacts and heals you for a set amount. So, say you get hit for 200, and the reactive heals for 200. No damage taken basically. But, if you're getting healed for more then the reactive does you start goin down quick. Which forces the healer to patch heal as well. I'd say Bruiser and Defiler (both evil). Monk and Mystic (both good). Or either brawler and a fury (furys can be good or evil) are the best bets...That is if you want to both be out of the same city. Defilers get cannibalize, mystics dont which also is nice for chaining mobs. Just another thing to think about. I dont know what the other tank classes like for duos as I dont play them =) Once you get the hang of it you'll just learn what goes together with what. Starting race really doesnt matter at all (beyond good vs evil) so pick whatever you like to look at. Oh, and i'm talkin PVE server =) dunno what flys on pvp.

You might want to have a read over the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum, it contains a bit more info on all the classes which might help you understand the differences and what might suit you!

And yes, you can only be one crafting class, you pick your final class at 20.

First off, every class in the game has a decent chance for success. Balance is not perfect, but it is good enough so that the player has more affect on how the character fares than game mechanics. Also, it's not a simple matter of choosing a class. The character still has to be developed with achievement skills. There are multiple paths for every class. Plus, every even level up to 50 you get race or training choices that can make your toon even more unique.

Don't be so afraid to experiment. Once you get the hang of the game you can get a toon leveled up quickly. Also, there are respec options available.

Do a search for some of the threads discussing Duo possibilities. There are many viable combinations.

You only get 1 primary and 1 secondary tradeskill per toon. There are 9 primary tradeskills. There are 2 secondary tradeskills.

What kind of server would you like? There are roleplay servers, PvP servers, regular servers, and Station Exchange servers. Station Exchange allows you to buy/sell toons and gear on SoE's market board for real life cash. Note that I said toons not accounts.
