I've been browsing the boards for the past week or so reading the different class boards. As with any MMO there seems to be a lot of differing opinions out there regarding the usefulness of certain classes in group/raid situations. I'm hoping to gather a little feedback before I take the plunge again.

I do tend to solo at time when I have short periods of play time, but my post today isn't about which classes can solo since they all appear to be sufficient solers.

However, today I'd like to ask your opinions on which classes are the most commonly utilized in group/raids. Are there certain classes best to avoid if my goal is to group/raid at higher levels? I don't have the time to invest in a character to find out that I am commonly being replaced due to my (or lack thereof) class skills.

Classes I've played in the past (2 years ago maybe), Monk, Berserker, Dirge, and Summoner.

Monk was fun, but it seems to be a common theme that monks are not the most sought after classes for high end groups/raids. They dont seem to bring that much to a group that cant be gained from some other class. It's too bad tho, fun class.

Berserker was another fun one. I really liked the rage aspect and the health regen. This was my highest level toon (31). Unfortunately, it appears you need to be in a large guild and a dedicated MT. Since I am neither, I am afraid it could be tough to be put in such a lead role.

Dirge, well I only got this guy to level 12 or so. Seemed fun but I dont really know much about it. I loved the songs tho!

Summoner, seemed like an awesome solo class with the pet. Not sure how much group value it really has though in compairison to the other caster classes.

So, any feedback for me? I'm excited to get back into EQ2 and I want to make a good class investment. Any opinions are welcome.

Much Thanks.

Conjuror is highly sought after for raids. Brings alot to the table for groups and raids and is the best solo class in game. I recommend it.

Ok, let's see here,

Alot of raids will usualy not want to accept many fighters along and most of the time the guilds already have these, so I would probly not recommend any of those if you wish to be in high demand.

Of the mages all of them are sought after for raids, enchanters (coercer/illusionist) probly more so than the others are they are normal not in big supply, the enchanters are also great for groups and solo as well, so I would recommend one of those to you.

All the priests usualy quiet easly get into raids as well, tho the fury is (atleast on my server) a rather common class to play due to theyr decent dps and healing abilities make them very popular for people wanting to play a healer. I would probly recommend a defiler as these are rather rare and sought after by raiders. They are rather slow solo'ers however.

Of the scouts I'd say they are all great for raids, and all offer diffrent things, altho rangers are said to the be most limited of the scouts when it comes to what they bring to a raid except theyr dps. As you mentioned dirges are often sought after for theyr buffs both for raids and group play, troubadors as well but probly a little less for grouping. Brigands are always a great attition to a raid as well and worth recommending.

What it comes down to is play almost any other class than the fighter and you will have a good chance to get on a raid, but I'd say the top 5 would be (in no special order) Coercer, Defiler, Templar, Dirge, Troubador. Any of these should almost guarantee you a spot on a raid while still beeing sought after in groups.

fighters are usually having hard time getting into raid (except MT/OT but it seems that it's not the position you are after) in some extreme rare cases it's good to have monk/bruiser in group (DT and crab comes to my mind as examples)

healers are always needed, raids usually need one of each type (well... typically it's more like 1 cleric 1 shaman 1 druid and 3 random healers), druids tend to be very common (especially furies) which reduces your chances, defiler and inquisitors seems to be rare (but this can vary from server to server)

scouts, from utility point of view raid typically wants 2 dirges, 2 troubadours, 2 brigands, 1 swashy or assasin (out of this list trobadours seems to be the rarest, followed by dirges and brigands (may vary between servers), there are millions of swashies usually, swashy/assasin/ranger/brigand can also get in as DPS class

mages, 1 coercer is good to have in raid (required in some cases) and raids tend to be happy to see chanters in general (mostly for power regen and haste/dps mods), necro/conj/wiz/warlock usually gets in as DPS (however there are places where conj's CotH or Necro's FD is very useful)

SolZer wrote:
so, enchanters are good soloers? never heard that before.

Illusionists are awesome soloers, I didn't expect much of them either till I tried one and then I was just blown away (and yes, I'd tried a monk, conjuror, necromancer, and wizard before, and found illusionist better than all of them).

Raid-wise my experience has been all healers of all types are generally welcome, dirges and troubadours and coercers are generally outright fought over, and any dps class is good for filling in empty spaces. The least desirable classes would probably be the 6 fighter types, since you really only need a couple tanks on a raid.

In my own experience, I have a 70 wizard, 70 illusionist, and 70 dirge. Whenever my guild goes on a raid, they want the dirge 95% of the time, and the illusionist 5% at most. The wizard, though useful, is never going to be chosen over the dirge or illusionist, since there are 8 perfectly good dps classes who can do damage, but only 2 enchanter classes who can mez and 4 with power regen, and only 1 dirge class that gets those wonderful dirge buffs.

That's just my own experience though - your mileage may vary. And of course the player skill is a big factor -- I'd take a really skilled bruiser player over a hopeless assassin player any day!

Ok, yes I'm rezing a thread, but I want to know how much of this is still true with raids in TSO? I loved necro's in EQ1, but have read they arn't good at raids for EQ2. I bet healers are still the most wanted, but I don't relly want to be a healer. I was looking at illusionist are wizard. I like the dps ranged class, but illusionist looked interesting. Anyway, how do the classes break down for raid want with TSO?

I raided up to VP before I left this game. You will always get into raids if you want to as an illusionist. Just read EQ2flame a bit.

Enchanter class has always been useful. DPS classes go up and down as their dps may be lower or higher at certain time, but utilities are always good unless they want to strip away utilities.

Enchanter is also good solo class. Back in 2007 I solo leveled my illusionist to 80 as a noooob wearing all crap quest gear and apprentice spells since I have no friends playing with me.

Wizard is also good. But I have a levle 60 warlock alt and I constantly died on my warlock even though my illy had plat to support him with master spells and nice gear. With my illy, if I had adds, I can cc them, with warlock I use brutal force or I die. If my illy cannot handle the situation, I just run away and let my pet handle the mobs alone (sacrifice my pet). lol

Both enchanters are all around good classes right now. High soloability High group desirability High raid desirability High dps (potentially) High utility
