I am returning to the game, but I've been gone awhile. I know my house won't be there any longer, but I was wondering if the things from inside the house be there?

The house will still be there (presuming you can remember where it is )

And all your stuff should still be there too.

Yup if your toons remained and still exist then nothing has changed about your posessions, gear, mounts or home. You'll need to pay your rent to access it is all.

Can anyone explain to me what the point is of having a 5 room apartment? Why is one, two, or three rooms not sufficient?

You can sell more things from a 5-room home. The number of broker slots you get increases with the number of rooms in your house/price of the housing, and the most expensive 5-room homes give you 6 broker sales slots. So if you want to have, for example, one sales box for spell scrolls, one box for weapons, one box for food and drink, one box for armour, and two boxes for general junk ... a 5 room gives you that space. Since only one character per server per account can sell at a time, the biggest house gives your selling character the maximum number of sales slots.

In addition to that you might just have a lot of stuff that you want to display -- I know one of my characters still has a 2-room, and with all the quest rewards I've obtained along the way I'm completely out of space to put anything down in it. Even the ones in 3-rooms are running out of room once their furniture is in there too. Lots of people enjoy decorating their houses nicely and 5-rooms provide the most space to do so. Some people have made the 5-rooms into crafting societies for example and placed one of each type of tradeskill crafting station in there for friends to come and use. Others create roleplay space -- taverns and hotels and guild halls and things - where public or guild events and meetings can be hosted. And of course it's a sign of prestige to have a huge house in a fancy location and be able to afford the purchase price and rent, some people just like to show off.

Admittedly you can do most of these things with a 3-room and many people choose to stick with that. I do myself - two characters having a 3-room home each gives me more space for junk than 1 character having a 5-room and it's cheaper too. Since I don't find I need more than 3 sales containers (in fact I rarely use more than 2) I've never been tempted to the 5 rooms. All depends on what you want to do with your house, really!

Just a tip for those penny pinchers out there who are on a tight budget. You can purchase 3 room home and get 4 rooms out of it (5 if you count that "back yard' area). Just stack tables along the beams above the first room. Go up the steps and voila.. you have a loft almost as large as your main room!
