Hey guys, Our guild's been lacking a coercer for so long that I'm considering betraying my illusionist to fill the gap, because although we are still progressing amazingly, it's clearly going to be the only thing holding us back relatively soon. So my question to you all is, how difficult is the transition between illusionist and coercer, if anyone has made it? I'm familiar with the illusionist class, but basically ignorant of coercers. I really hate doing it because I love my illusionist with all my heart, but if we can't get a coercer, life will suck forever.

I made the transition and it wasn't easy. The pets you get now do a whole lot more damage and you can really manipulate yourself solo around zones but when you're dueling a wizard in an area with no pets it takes a whole lot longer and there's no more 100% guarantee of winning.

The biggest hurdle (that I have yet to overcome) is remembering that the stifle is a DOT and I gotta remember to make some time by stunning it for a while before the DOT goes away before mezzing.

Best way to say it is they actually did a good job at making our classes almost the complete oposites. Not saying you can't handel the change, but just remember It's nothing like your Illu, we DPS differently, you only have 2 mezzes and are more focused on stuns and REALLY good timing. Probably one of the bigest things about a Coercer is you have to learn to put your personal stats and DPS asside for the better of your buffs and helping the team. The best raid style Coercers rarely DPS higher than 1k. (Given expect to be in that 250 ~ 400 area for a while until you get the correct AA and the "non-chrono" sytle DPSing down.) Me, for example, have no Speed AA, am oriented around raid buffs, feeds and mana regen, but can break 1,200 on a parse against even or yellow cons.

I'm actually a Coercer on Unrest and am surprised that with ya'lls popularity that you are still looking for one. (Or a good one atleast =p) I say find a Coercer that can, or once you become one, solo CMM, MMC, CoV and the first named in OoB with out a problem AND can break 1k on raid parses while maintaining 70+ mana a tick. Once you have these down, you have Coercer pretty much mastered.

If you have questions or need tips in game /tell me. I'll either be on Fnar (my Coercer), Asuna (my Dirge) or Fritzy (my Defiler).

Good luck with the change, oh, ,and welcome to the dark side. ~_^

One thing I did forget to mention. Long as the Coercer has 50+ AA, Nizara should be a cake walk. This zone is also an excelent way to test how the Coercer reacts to differnt control type situations, to see how well he plans and understands encounters, and also a great place to train yourself if you decide to go that route. (God I love that zone... 29 successful runs and counting, over 40 guildies Rift flagged, countless upgrades. Good stuff.)
