I believe that was placed there so that you could join others that might be in another instance of that zone. Meaning that if there are so many players in that zone they will open up another instance (GFay 2). If your teammates zone in at a time that GFay 1 is full they will be sent to the next instance. If you need to zone to their instance you can use that portal to do so.

I used to use it occasionaly to avoide the crowd (lag) but it hardley ever is working anymore due to low population.

After a certain number of people log into G'fay the zone will "clone itself", create a copy that subsequent people logging in will enter. This is to prevent over-crowding of the zone which will ease lag considerably for you. You can go into any clone, we call them instances, that you want. When you enter a zone that has multiple instances or copies, you are offered a choice as to which instance you would like to enter.

Every zone in EQ2 can clone itself like this when it reaches a certain population threshold. The threshold is different for every zone. It takes a lot more people to instance Commonlands than to instance Wailing Caves.

Some zones create a private instance for group or solo party that enters. That means only you and your group will ever be in that zone. A good example is Splitpaw. You can do it solo, or with a group. And, the mobs scale to your level. If you go in solo, the mobs are solo encounters. If you go in a group, the mobs are heroic.

[P.S. on the first day of the game I saw 35 instances of the newbie isle]

I just wanted to make you aware of a not very well documented way (to say the least) of joining the correct version of any zone the rest of your group is in:

Join the group as normal

Right-click on any group member's name in the Group window

Choose "Join Instance" (or something similar; can't remember exactly what it says, but it's very obvious)

You will zone into the correct version of whatever zone the person's who name you chose is in

This saves a ton of time, obviously, but I'm seldom amazed at how many people (lots of 70s included) aren't aware of this feature -- it isn't documented very well.
