After playing my paladin to 70 full seasons, I'm now starting a baby templar and have some questions. In many ways, soloing with the templar is like soloing with a paladin at the same level - although I think the templar has more DPS, I am sad to report. I just got Yaulp, and I confess that I am confused about how and when to use this ability. Can a more experienced templar help me understand Yaulp?

The key to using Yaulp is it constantly sucks up power. So I normally only use it if I don't plan on having to heal much or I am soloing. As you can probably guess having something sucking your power away when you need to heal is really bad so if you do have it on in a fight that turns bad you should probably turn it off right away. But I always turn it on right away when I am soloing.

At higher levels the power drain from Yaulp is negligible when compared to the benefits.

Yaulp also tends to work better if a Templar is meleeing significantly (which, as a former paladin, you should be doing already). My recommendation is to find high damage capacity weapons and take the STA achievement line as soon as you're able. Go 4-4-8 into STA and then 4-4-8 into AGI as well. After that, you can choose to take on a hybrid spellcasting/melee build with the INT line (which is also a good idea if you find yourself solo healing groups very often).

If you are lower level, do your best to find any high power or wisdom items you can (as well as strength items for the increased melee damage). Try to find a bit of flowing thought if at all possible, or at least pick up power potions. When you're high enough level, complete the manastone quest.

Ditto whats already been said. I usually have it on, even while grouping, unless we're going up against tough mobs. It's easily toggled off or recast, so as long as you remember that you have it on, it shouldnt be a big deal. The power drains much more noticeable at lower levels, but not so much when higher, except on drawn out fights.

The only other big thing to remember is that your focus takes a hit when you've got it on, and you'll see more interrupts, especially if you are soloing. Toggle it off if youre taking on larger groups or mobs that interrupt a lot. I went down the strength aa, and found the + focus/disruption passive ability boost makes a huge difference in reducing the interrupts, as well as the final skill in that line is a 16 sec (if I recall correctly) buff that prevents stifles and interrupts, which has come in mighty handy more than a few times for me.
