Personally I find all the soga models horrific. Their faces are flat and featureless, the male bodies are seemingly pumped full of steroids and the female bodies are horribly anorexic.

Typical anime/manga/J-Crap rubbish imho. Ditch the bloody things and save everyone the hassle.

Unfortunately, most of the human and human-like original models seriously suffer from the whole 'uncanny valley' syndrome, where they tried to make them realistic, and it just makes the small things that are 'off' all the more glaring. Playdoh-like hair, dead eyes, the complete lack of eyebrows on some models (this is especially true of the Humans). The soga models never really struck me as particularly anime, but they are more stylized, and don't suffer from the little artistic problems of the original models. If the art team were to go through the original models and make some changes to make them more...well, attractive, perhaps make them a bit more stylized (though not as much as soga), I might actually turn off the soga models I currently run with.

Yeah, the human-type figures do look a little odd. Some of the hair-dos are pretty unfortunate. They look to me like they've stuck their heads under ice cream dispensors and had a Mr. Whipple curled-out on 'em. In comparison to WoW's distinctive, cartoony, 'chunkey' character models, which- whatever you may think of the game as a whole- do have a lovely, weighty feel to them, the EQ2 models seem slightly more fragile. I like to think of the graphical difference between the two games as "Quake vs UT", where WoW's shares Quake's chunky, solid looks, and EQ2 has UT's more 'realistic', skinny hu-mans.

Personally, whilst I like the chunky WoW look, I prefer EQ2's overall attempt at 'realism' in proportions between people and things, although to be honest, the EQ2 characters do sometimes feel a little too lightweight and floaty. Except for my Ogre Shadowknight. She weighs about 200 tons and makes footprints that have Queynosian archaelogists baffled.

I'll be interested to see if this skeletal overhaul thing they're working on makes it any easier to implement character anims. It would nice to finally be able to sit down or interact with all the amazing furniture and stuff, especially since the more realistic look of EQ2 cries out for role playing. I always had trouble RPing in WoW because it felt like watching Teletubbies and making your own, even more stupid, noises. I reckon EQ2 could pull in a lot of new players that are more hardcore RPers if you could say to them 'Look at this beautiful, semi-realistic world, you can do all the kinds of emotes that WoW players are used to, and so on'.

The problem I have with the regular models for the High Elves and Dark Elves are...their eyes mostly. Beady little things that look FAR too small to be able to see out of. I've enjoyed art featuring Elves for most of my life. Some good, some bad. EQ2's is...mediocre at best. The SOGA models for the two elves seem better. For some reason, the wood elves faces as well as the half elf face in regular are just fine. /shrug I prefer those to the SOGA. I like aspects of the barbarian in SOGA seem nice, but I still like the regular models. The gnomes in SOGA don't look like their 100 years old and about to fall over dead. The nose on the other hand....I've a friend who plays a gnome who has asked me to please NOT use SOGA. lol I'm honoring his request. Ogre's....no...SOGA ogres are just WRONG!?! They look like Troll relatives! Uhuh...no go at this stage. Same with the Trolls and halflings. In my opinion...and it is ONLY my opinion....the Koada'Dal, Teir'Dal, humans and gnomes look best in SOGA. The rest are just fine in regular models.

The official Everquest 2 message boards are full of debates regarding the new, up and coming Character models created for the Asian market that will be made available to the US players in the near future as an optional setting. Some players love the idea while others wish SOE would spend more time and effort improving the current models. Old news? Perhaps... but the question continues to pop up ... What is SOGA anyway?

SOGA, a company comprised of 35 elite game creators from the U.S, Japan and Taiwan, will continue to use SOE's newest technologies to develop games that are suitable for the Asian market, leading with EverQuest II* (EQ II) Asia edition. To better fulfill the demand and taste of this market, SOGA replaced EQ II's edgy western style characters with more appropriate ones for Asian cultures.

Answer the who, what, when and why. Read the entire article on Intel's site.

from http://eq2.tentonhammer.com/modules...cle&sid=305

However i like all the "original" female elfs, and think the Soga versions are plain ugly, and also most other anima/manga models in other games look way better in my opinion.

Human default characters have a horrible selection of hairstyles that nobody uses.
